    Trying to avoid wife agro

K, here's the scoop... I've done a lot of upgrading lately, and spent a fair bit of money... I killed my original Maximus Formula board due to metal contact (don't ask) so I bought another and assumed Asus wouldn't replace the dead one... well the dead one was replaced and just arrived. This leaves me with an extra motherboard, and a 8800GTw/hr06 just lying around. I've decided that I'll do a quick upgrade to the wifes computer, it's an old P4-2.8 agp system.

Here's the dilemma... I need to do it cheap so she's not choked at me spending more money again (she's pretty cool about it, but even I'm starting to feel slightly guilty). I only need to pick up a CPU and RAM to do a complete upgrade for her (has decent PSU, case etc).

I'm thinking E4600 for the CPU instead of my "geek desire" to get her an e8400. This will save me about $100.

The system is used for pretty heavy gaming... is it going to make a HUGE difference if I go with the e4600? I know I can get at least 3ghz out of the CPU on the Maximus, if not a lot more.

Maybe feedback from people who have the e4600 would be helpful.

If you're prepared to put in a slight bit of overclocking to get the clock speed up it will do just fine for gaming. It certainly won't bottleneck the 8800GT.

Well, true to my form, and probably not going to be a surprise to my wife, I overspent.

Went down to get the e8400 and 2gb kit of Mushkin PC6400, should have been under $300.

    What I ended up buying:
    1. e8400 ($219)
    2. Mushkin Hp6400 2GB DDR2 ($55)

Then I started thinking "Maybe her power supply isn't really up to it"... then I thought, "well I wouldn't mind upping mine a little". (Bought my Corsair HX620 2 months ago)

    3. Toughpower 850w ($229)

Need to cool the CPU properly

    4. Ultra 120 Extreme ($65)

Wow, I like the look of that new Logitech keyboard/mouse combo

    5. Logitech MX5500 keyboard/mouse combo ($159)

I should probably get some beer so I can handle her reaction when she gets home.

    6. 24 pack ($40) (This is Canada, thus the price)

    I'm hopeless.

    Rofl dude.

Sounds like me on a shopping spree.

Luckily over time i learned myself to look and buy good stuff every once in a while instead of doing it every week. :P

you'll be glad in the long run that you got the E8400. they are leaps and bounds beyond what the Celeries have to offer. triple the cache memory, much higher FSB, more energy efficient. good choice.

Well the CPU etc is installed and running nicely. After 9 beer my wife understood (I think). It definitely doesn't feel as fast as my Q6600, but it's a huge step up from the old comp she had. Now I must pay my penance. Good night.

my only gripe with your purchase and i think you are going to find out for yourself is the U120 Xtreme.

you will find out they are EXTREMELY loose on the cpu, you have to do a little modificating (lol a little george bush humor) to the mounting bracket to get it to hold the heatsink snug.

also and this is more important. chek the base of the heatsink for flatness. if it isnt flatter than your butt after sitting in a chair for 6 hours then take it back ,, DO NOT sand it or anything, take it back. spend the money on a Tuniq or something.
