Need For Speed: Carbon. Widescreen Pics and How To...56k Warning.

well, theres a trick to getting NFS:Carbon to work in wide screen.

all other methods I tried, do little else then stretch the image to fit a widescreen resolution, which just sucks...

heres how you get a unstretched widescreen resolution for this game.

    Step 1.

you need a No-CD/DVD hack. it's not optional.
to bypass the games resolution check, you need to kill the CD check...
same as if you were playing Need For Speed Underground 2.

    Step 2.

Rename the Games EXE (not the shortcut, the actual EXE) to "Speed2.exe"

    Step 3.

    download the Universal Widescreen Patcher.

    http://www.widescreengamingforum.com...itle=Downloads

    Step 4.

Using UniWSP, tell the patcher to look for the need for speed underground 2 game. this is why you had to rename the EXE, so it UniWSP will find this.

when it does, then you have the option of patching the game, to a specific resolution, through the UniWSP.
    patch your EXE.

    Step 5.

in the game, your new custom set resolution will only work, when you select 640 x 480 resolution within the game.

    thats it.
with this method, the game will work flawlessly, and will not be a streched image, as you can see from my own game shots.

More Images Below if you want to see.

    Settings.
    Everything Maxed Out and Enabled.
Crossfire X1950's used. 3.6 ghz Cornoe and 2 gigs Mushkin ram.
all driver settings maxed, except AA, which is set to "allow program to chose" and adaptive AA is disabled by default (I cant tell in any game what that does so I never use it)

now if only I could find the car dealer... so I can try some of the other cars haha...

no, mods are rarely the same between games.

need for speed games tend to be modded the same, so the same mod that worked for Need For Speed Underground 2, works for Carbon.
but the same mod wouldnt work for any other game.

you wanna find mods for widescreen hacks, check out the widescreengaming forums.

man, the WS fix here is actually a zoom of sorts. i had to go back to the standard look, it was a bit difficult to work with the slightly distorted aspect

its not a zoom of any sort.
look at the before and after pics the guys at WSGF did.
it clearly shows the same pics from 4:3 to 16:10 showing the exact same image. but the 16:10 shows more of the side, but still the same from the up/down view.
no zoom should be in effect unless you did it wrong, like I said in the first post.

you absolutly need a No CD hack of some sort for this to work.
do it any other way, and you will get a stretched image.

the only visual distortion from this mod, is the HUD circle, becomes slightly oval.... no idea why that is, and why it is completely independant of the actual resolution used... but all NFS games when modded have been like that.

    I really dont know.
probably can be done with a registry hack, since the HUD isnt part of the frame rate of the game.

I just tried this today in Underground 2. It is indeed distorting the image somehow.

Even in Carbon it isn't perfect. These games are technically labled "vert-" for losing some vertical viewing area.

    http://www.widescreengamingforum.com...pic.php?t=7915

I found myself wanting to sit further away from the screen, like it brought things in too close to be comfortable with. It also stretches all the HUDs and menus. It needs further fixing but its usable.

How do I patch Carbon if I have NFSU2 installed aswell, when I hit find Speed2.exe it will only find my Need For Speed Underground 2 one, and I cannot select exe files manually with the program, also tryed renaming NFSU2's run file so that the app couldnt see it and would find Carbon instead but it didnt work!

    Any Ideas?

If you rename NFSU to something else, and name Carbon Speed2.exe it should work...

    You can also try this:

That's not only one of the least popular NFS titles, that hack is said to be a mere crop job. It says right on it Vert-, which means same horizontal view with cropped vertical. Even that is incorrect though. In the 4:3/16:10 comparison shots on the NFS: Carbon page of the WSGF Master games List, you can clearly see the 16:10 pic shows the same amount of Vert with no cropping and that the minimap is not round. This hack is even worse than a Vert- method because as mentioned it distorts the image to stretch it horizontally. If there WERE a name for such an AR workaround it would be "Hor Stretch".

Hor+ is the only true way to offer real widescreen support. It's the only way to actually add more peripheral view. You can clearly see in these cutscenes and the ones on WSGF that there's no peripheral view added. Like I said I really don't see the big deal about this. The game is 5 yrs old, one of the worst in the series, and you want people to get excited about a mere stretch to fit AR hack? Come on man, be realistic. Quite frankly I'm surprised that a forum as technically inclined toward WS as WSGF is would allow such a gross error in the description of a WS hack. Clearly someone over there is not doing their job right concerning the accuracy of that Master Games List.

Those graphics look remarkably close to the latest NFS titles (shift 2 unleashed and hot pursuit). Kinda a shame they PC ports don't get worked on as much as consoles these days, that's probably also what's holding back the graphics.
