So much for 3DMark06's good fps on today's hardware

Last but not least, a live demo of the upcoming 3DMark2006. This test is certainly longer than the current GT3 of 3DMark05 with much HDR effects in it. Even with a pair of 7800GTX in SLI, the average frame rate is a mere 11.2 fps.

VR-Zone coverage on HKEPC tech day 2005, scroll to bottom

I thought 3DMark06 was all about being "playable" on today's hardware?

They must be making very good progress when they already demo '06, hopefully they didn't cover optimizations yet

True, but still, two of today's high end GFX cards can't even manage more then 15fps....

For instance, 3DMark05.....the hardware at that time (6 series nVidia, ATI X800)couldn't run '05 properly too, to me it's all abit too crazy... so considering Futuremarks trackrecord...it isn't looking to well at all TBH....I can't comment on '03, because I wasn't really into high end PC's back then...

But I agree, let's wait and see

3dmark always sucks for the first year you have it...

hell, 3dmark2003 is only now getting fun to do
3Dmark2005 is bearable, but not so fun to do, cause it's choppy sometimes still.

At least it's going to be a pretty slideshow. Maybe not on my 6600, as I'd rather see more than 1 fps!

Dude, you don't know how right you are !!
On my old graphic card, a GeForce FX5600 XT, 3dmark2003 was bearable but not fun to do . 3dmark05 was unbearable at all with 1 fps !!!
Now, i have an ATI 9800 PRO AIW. I find 3dmark03 fun ! But i find 3dmark05 as 3dmark03 for the old graphics card. This means that 3dmark06 will be unbearable at 1 fps !!! lmao

    It says "No Photp Allowed"

I was happy that 05 aint that choppy with my new upgrades and now 06 will be most likely another (nice) slideshow

well, my 9600XT gets about (slightly worse actually) that in 05, so does that mean we will have to wait 2 generations of cards (or for quad cfire/SLI) to break into 5 figures?

Traditionally...3dmark score from one generation to another have dropped to a 1/3rd...10k in 01 means 3.3k in 03 which means 1.1k in 05...which is about right for most. This however is not completely accurate due to varying cpu/shader dependencies of different versions.

But if we use the 1/3rd method for the moment, a X1800XT would score a 3k in 3dmark06 and the GTX 512MB to score 3.3k. Though we should see the R580 and the G71 hitting 5k+ on 3dmark06...

I like to think that graphics technology is moving so fast, that 3DMark05 became obsolete faster than they expected, and they're quickly having to release a new one that won't be CPU limited for an entire generation of cards.

That's right...one big factor for them is that we are already very very cpu limited

Faster CPUs to be faster at 1024x768?

Why not bench at higher resolutions to be less CPU-bound? 1280x1024 is standard right now, so why are there still these low-res-benches?

lol, cpus havent been limiting the cards at all... :P
check sli and crossfire scores, even running 2 cards in 1024x768 isnt limiting the cards at all, so cpu power is not whats keeping the scores low, its the vpu power!

11fps... well if its not optimized yet we might see 13fps or 15fps, but it wont go much above that if you ask me... :/
but since nvidia is showcasing this they have had it for weeks if not months and its already optimized...

SLI is especially CPU limited, and since there's so much driver overhead involved with it, multithreaded 80 series Forceware drivers paired up with a dual core CPU give you some good improvements over single core.

didn't I read somewhere that the amount of pixel-something processing affects 3dmark06 the most? something R580 will have (48 something, fill me in please) and ofcourse nvidia will follow.

    this is crazy!
I was lucky to finally manage '05 with good fps rates and now this?
but it is the same everytime...remember 01' on my TNT2 ^^
Then finally got Ti4400 - everything was good...
    then '03 came...
even with 9800Pro it wasn't really satisfying, 6600GT came and it was good again...
then I started '05 and saw <20fps in the first test....
finally got my current X800GTO, modded it and finally constantly >25fps in the first test, second one with critical, but enough fps.
    and now this.........
