Warning... do NOT get a 600 core read here:

Ok, just a little update. Having a hellova time getting things stable and Im afraid I know why.

For those who have plans to buy 600s DO NOT! Unfortunatly like the current state of my life im going to be getting rid of this most likely as well. Probably very soon. Starting to run out of options, not sure what I should do

The issue with the 600s that make them **** Ocer chips is this "throttleing" nonsense. Ill explain:

When your CPU is on idle it automatically throttles the CPU back to:
    14 x 200 @ 1.2v = 2.8ghz

Not such a big deal right?

Here's the *real* issue that no one discusses here. When it throttles it does so purely by multipliers. So when you push the bus up you run into serious problems. Observe

    <normal> 16 x 250 = 4ghz @ X.Xv
    <throttle>14 x 250 = 3500mhz @ 1.2v

Once the throttle kicks on instead of running your processor at a small 2.8ghz instead it attemps to force your Prescott to run at 3.5ghz @ 1.2v. THAT is a serious problem if you are looking to break 4ghz or have a high bus speed

Thats a hell of alot to ask of ANY processor much less a prescott. Because of this you can and will get errors when you push the CPU up purely because of the idle voltage being so damned low.

As for the review Im going to end sadly on this sour note. I have no need for a CPU that maxes out pre-maturely because of this.

Care to give some CPU-Z shots Sentential??

So sorry to hear that, and I for one knew that you were quite excited about the 600 series. Though can you try it on another board. Perhaps this shows problems with 6xx compatibility with your 865PE chipset??? Just a thought, u might want to try that before sending the CPU back.

Hope you find a good solution to this. (Though whatever you do dont give up on Intel yet lol). But if it does the same exact thing on a 915p or 925x chipset we might have an issue here. In which a certain E0 stepping 5xx processor should VERY easily satisfy your thirst for a good OC.

Always nice to have ppl willing to try out new hardware on their own to warn other about its risks. Hopefully, its a bios issue at launch.

Do you mean that the voltaje throttles too to it's nominal value?

Throttling by multiplier is not new, E0 5xx CPU's do it too, my 540J with C1E capabilities enabled in bios throttles to 14x multiplier when idle but of course the voltaje is unchanged so when you have some cpu load it automatically set 16x multi.

I'm running 250x16 with load and 250x14 idle, both at 1.4v.

I take it there's no way to disable this throttling in your BIOS or something? I don't have a lot of experience with P4's so don't mind my asking.

IIRC from another thread, you have the ASUS P5AD2-E right?
So the ASUS lets you disable the throttling? Which option is it if I may ask.

Perhaps Sentinel's BIOS in the ABit (I think) doesn't support this?

I'd also like to know if the P5AD2-E allows you to disable SpeedStep because I'm considering getting the board with a new 600 series chip.

Sen is using an Abit AS8, they haven't released a new BIOS to officially support the new 600 series chips, so I have a feeling it's Abit's fault.

Don't jump to conclusions so fast about the new platform Sen, I'm pretty sure the Asus board allows you to disable SpeedStep. Abit is just slacking on this issue.

Take a look there, I could disable it with my P5P800 and with my AS8 I didn't even have to do this.

No, it isn't, Execute Bit Disable is about NX Flag (antivirus related), if you don't have the C1E option in bios you can try the program provided by Hipro5 in this same thread.
