    6800GT->6800Ultra mod

I have a 6800GT getting shipped to my house right now. I'm planning to add the 2nd molex and the caps that are missing from it. Are those the only differences between the 2 cards other than ram chip speed ratings?

Could someone with a Ultra post the specs of the caps? So I will know which ones to order or if I happen to already have them in stock. On the GT is the molex connector disconnected, or is it just not there? Will it become reconnected with the caps and chokes added back in?

EDIT: I just noticed there is a huge amount of little caps missing from the front and the back too, this will be quite a project. Also, are those black things chokes? I can't get a good angle on them to see exactly what they are.

It's not just the caps... there are 2 missing "chips" underneath the heatsink next to the caps as well... those chips can not be soldered on manually because they're BGA style chips...

I'm really interested if the molex is currently connected and just the plastic is removed, or if its completely out of the circut. I might just put those 2 big caps, and 2 chokes on along with the molex if its already connected. If I need to connect everything (All the SMD caps and those BGA chips) then I guess I won't bother.

well, nothing bad, but it might not do anything if it has been taken out of the circut.

so craig, did you try all of that and if so with what as a result?
looks like a few caps, a few mosfets (or sth similar) and a few smd resistors. what about the powerconnector? is it connected?

so many question and maybe an answer?

it looks like theres about 30 SMD caps and resistors on the front and back that you would need, as well as the cap's and the mosfet in the middle rear of the card on the back, even with all this hooked up theres no garuntee its even set to draw power at all from those solder points

can you see the light? is it shining too bright? can you see the light at the end of the tunnel, i know i do, i know its true.

I think is possible to do this mod, but you've to know what you're doing, specially you got to be a good solder

I had my board out last night and was looking at the traces. One of the missing molex connectors goes directly to one of the 2 missing big caps, and dead ends there. In other words, connecting the second molex without at least that cap would be useless. Also, those big caps would be hard to solder on because it looks like they only solder to the top layer, not al the way through the board.

There's another thread going here about just connecting two rails at the one connector. I wonder if that works just as well. Probably not since Nvidia would have done it that way to save money if it did work.

That dosn't work, it just stabalizes the voltage going to that one rail, it will not increase the amount that can go there.

I don't understand what you mean. I don't have much knowledge on how everything works, I just do the mods and accept that they do work I would like to understand tho, so I try.

Would you need all those little smd capacitors and resistors or just the 2 caps and 2 chokes on the front? I know what resistors do, but what purpose do they serve in this? Also, whats the diff. between smd capacitors and the um... normal type of capacitor? If they are on the same line, if you just added a few larger caps, wouldn't they serve the same purpose?

edit: also, what do chokes do? I don't know anything about them, this is the first time I've heard of them. Also, what is that on the back of the ultra to the left of the missing smd caps/resistors?

    its a transistor
my card doesnt have the smd chokes on the front, but instaed it has mosfets
chokes are ferrite donuts with copper coils like on a mb

I'd say the only way to do this mod would be through godly soldering skills. soldering on 30+ SMDs and even removing a few on the back, as well as soldering 2 caps with very short legs into only 1 layer of PCB would be virtually impossible.
