MSI K8N NEO Plat Vdimm & Vdd Mods

A thread about the Vdimm mod for this board is already underway, but I thought posting both mods on a new thread would make things easier for members to get the info they needed without having to read the entire thread.

The original thread can be found here.

Now, the Vdimm mod can be done 1 of 2 ways. You can do the Vdimm = 3.3v Rail Mod, or you can do the method that allows adjustment via a VR.

One odd note to make is that with the VR, the highest I could achieve was 2.936v. Keep in mind that I worked on this board without a cpu to test with. The stock Vdimm was 2.5v, so we are almost a solid 0.5v above stock without the ability to check other settings to see how the Vdimm responds. Once someone does this mod that has the ability to change the bios settings, we will know more. I dont know what the max Vdimm setting is in the bios, but I am wagering that this mod allows well over 3v once the cpu and ram are in the loop and bios settings are available.

    On to the pics:

    Vdimm = 3.3v Rail Mod

The preferred method, IMHO, allows the user to adjust the Vdimm to their preferrence. This involves cutting a trace on the back of the board and adding a resistance in this location to force the W83304D to supply more juice to our dimms.

The following pic provides an overview of whats going on on the back of the board. The "may" be a way to do this on the front of the board, but I have to move onto other things, and pretty sure there is not a place on front to do this mod.

Here are my wires quickly soldered in place for this pic:

This next pic simply shows where I mounted the VR and the voltage reading points for Vdimm and Vtt. Note that Vtt track properly well past 3v as I tested it with the Vdimm = 3.3v Rail Mod and at a Vdimm of 3.35v, the Vtt was perfectly 1/2 of Vdimm.

Now, here is the Vdd Mod as well:

    Cheers

Another important note is that the Vdd FET will have increased voltage on both of its legs running into the pcb. I would recommend adding a sink to it just to be safe.

Basically, the actual leg reading Vdd is 1/2 of the voltage of the top leg in the above pic. So, when approaching a Vdd over 1.8v or more, the top leg is reaching almost 4v.

I also recommend adding active cooling the NB if you plan on more than 1.85v Vdd. Or atleast securing the sink with thermal epoxy so better contact is made.

(If anyone has 2-Pin or 3-Pin fans that they can do without? I am in need. The fan doesnt have to work or even be useful at all. Basically I want the plugs.)

I have plenty of these 2pin 3pin I will be sending. I also have a friend that is suppost to be able to get any fan cheap(works in apliance repair) he say he will get me 3 or 4 dozen of asorted fans for tuning his car, shouldnt be no prob to thro some your way if you need some fans to. I see your need in the connectors I also have a few dead power supplies you can salvage.

Keep you some good pics of the board & when I get a CPU in it I will try to figure the LDT voltage mod(with your advice of course.

I figured it was eating a lot of time & you need to get on with things.

I finally got some bills payed today which will let me order some boards, if this one want do its thing now will just give MSI the boot.

The board in your AV is it a Infinity, do you run the DFIs.

    Hey man.

Naw, thats the trusty ole NF7 doing 245 fsb.

I would apprec any connectors you can send my way.

I am almost positive that the Vdimm mod is correct, and the Vdd is certainly working properly.

The blue connectors are what I stick my multimeter plug into to check the voltages. Keeps me from causing a short circuit.

There is a resistor in the Vdimm loop, but I couldnt register a change in Vdimm when working with it.

I am going to take another quick look at it before shipping back to the owner.

Kind of a newbie on this. Would this mod work on a K8N Neo2 Platinum?

Guys, I have been pretty sick the last few days. I wont get into specifics, but it wasnt pretty.

Doc was confused as to what it may have been, but after telling him that I spent a ton of time soldering, he sid it was most likely solder and flux fumes.

I didnt have time, nor did I feel like, testing as I would have had to gone to a computer shop to do so since I dont have the cpu needed for this.

I am shipping out tomorrow back to Jess and he will post his findings I am sure.

Those fumes are bad for ya.. I have a small fan I use to create a negative air pressure opposite my head which pulls the air in that direction enough to keep it out of my face and not cool my iron or bug me...

12v fan, 120v fan.. whatever you can find that will work is a good idea!

When it gwts here I will throw them in the box you shiped me & send it back with all the connectors. Dont forget the return address or PM it back to me. I clear my mail out regulor so probably dont have the address still.

I will post results back for everybody as soon as I get it back.

Yes, connecting a wire between those 2 spots will make the Vdimm equal to whatever the 3.3v power rail is running. I would keep the wire as short as possible.

The max voltage will depend on your power supplies 3.3v rail.

have you had a chance to verify that the 3.3 vdimm mod dont kill the mem controller yet as i seen that to be a similar factor in most of the deaths.

    Ok thanx for the reply....

So what i can understand is just get any wire.... will the wire from the IDE cables do??? and connect the 2 spots and wola! the mod is done....

Now dont u think 3.3 for a start is toomuch for the ram???

    I have had my corsair pc3500 BH-5 running @ 3.28v 24/7 but more i am a bit hastly.....

So what if i want the ram only to run @ say 3.28v? will i have to lower my 3.3vrail to 3.28v???
