    MCW50-T Dissassembly Question

Who here has taken this block apart?

I think the TEC inside mine has gone to overclocking heaven. The cold plate does not get cold in the least....so assuming the pelt bit it.

I think I recall reading along time ago that the pelt was actually directly cooled by the water versus being between the actual water block and the cold plate....as is the case with the MCW462UT.

It shares a res with my cpu block, so dont wanna take it apart and have this damned water and coolant pour out everywhere.

    Put clips on both pipes
Majormav had very good write up on how to upograde it to 172 watter (which requires taking the thing apart).
Fro mwhat I remember you'd propably need new gaskets set from swiffy (if you canot make one yourself) and you also need to be extra careful with rubber O-ring type seal... try to dig out origina stuff from sowhere (mav's write up)

there's some pics of a disassembled MCW50-t here:

    http://www.ocfaq.com/reviews/shootou...0tvsmaze41gpu/

it's quite easy to do, took me about 10 mins using MajorMav's guide and those pics.

edit: it was Major Slaughter's guide

    http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...threadid=20335

I didn't have to cut the gasket, I just gently peeled the bottom layer off (it's attached with double sided tape, fits back on easily).

Thats guys....guess I shoulda used the Search linky...but I wanted input from members that had done it.

Alot of times people read links, then do the mods that are proposed on the links and find a different, or better, way to do it. So, sometimes better to stick up a thread and wait for repsonses.

Looks like I will move to the 172w tec, and grab another psu for it since running it off my Antec will tax the hell out of it.

    Cheers.

    Pics =) step by step

I have just finished the procedure, to changing the MCW50-T pelt to a 172w. I took some pics -walkthrough- to supplement the Major Slaughter guide.

    Hope it helps

    1) Remove the foam insulation on the bottom of the MCW50-T, not all of the foam, only the part that overlaps on the bottom of the block. Try to remove it without damaging it. I used a sharp razor blade and just cut it off in one peice so that it can be reused.

PAY ATTENTION TO THE RED WIRE ON THE OLD PELT, THE NEW PELT MUST BE INSTALLED WITH THE RED WIRE IN THE SAME PLACE If you put a pelt down in front of you with the red wire on your right, the part of the pelt that is facing upward will be the COLD side and the side facing downard is the HOT side !

What kind of PSU do you need to run that 172w pelt?

Well I read around, can you guys correct me if Im wrong

    1. I will need to get a 172w Pelt that runs @ 24volts
    2. The pelt will run fine off of 12v so no 24v PSU is needed
    3. It would be advisable to get a seperate PSU just for the pelt
    4. Pelt needs to be a 40mm x 40mm to fit the MCW50-T

I have a enermax 651 wich has a very high 12v line, will that be enough to power the TEC and the system or do I have to get a seperate PSU for it?

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Shroomy

It will run the pelt fine, but not at its full potential of course.

I would be sure to check the air coming from the psu exhaust fan to make sure that the psu is being kept cool.

I run my 172 watt Pelt with a Meanwell 240-15 which is a 15 volt supply I have turned up to 19 volts which would put the pelt at 80% of the 24 volt max. I am also using a pump relay kit from Danger Den to turn on and off with computer.

From what I gather, the 172w pelt has a current max of around 12amps.

If your supply is stock at 15v & 15a, then what kinda current are you running at 19v?

MrCrusher what is the temp difference you get between 12V and 19V really questioniong weither or not to get a PSU rated at a higher Voltage.

The lowest temp I was able to get on 19.5 volts from the Meanwell was 16c with ambient at 28c with 1.80v to the GPU. The ford heater core rad #9026 I purchased for this test felt cold to the touch for the whole test.

    Vgpu..... Temp..... Core.... Vpelt
    1.80v..... 16c..... 411Mhz.....19v
    1.90v..... 17.6c... 455Mhz....19v
    1.95v..... 24c..... 480Mhz.....19v
    2.00v..... 25c..... 492Mhz.....19v
    2.20v..... 32c..... 500Mhz.....19v
    2.25v..... 38c..... 510Mhz.....19v

If I compare this to 12.5 Volts running off my PSU to the Pelt the lowest I was able to get was 24c. There is a point were the output of the 9800XT overwhelms even a 172w Pelt. I think this starts about 2.15 volts.

    Vgpu..... Temp..... Core.... Vpelt
    1.80v..... 24c..... 411Mhz.....12.5v
    1.90v..... 25c..... 455Mhz.....12.5v
    1.95v..... 28c..... 480Mhz.....12.5v
    2.00v..... 32c..... 492Mhz.....12.5v
    2.20v..... 38c..... 500Mhz.....12.5v
    2.25v..... 45c..... 510Mhz.....12.5v

nice guide Goyo, but I don't know if you can use that hex wrench to install the coldplate. i think it's only for removing the coldplate. installing should be done with some special pressure power screwdriver. i used that hex wrench to change pelt in my mcw462uht and after few days it died. they (swiftech) said using that wrench may create hot spots on the pelt because of uneven pressure on each screw. just a warning from a bad experience.
