    Dothan & Heatsink

someone mentioned that the beautiful Thermalright XP120 is a "no-no" for installing it on a Dothan chip because it can easily crack the core.

my question is: Has anyone tried modding the installation?

I could make some tiny thin pads(something thinner than standard pads used on 32bit AMD processors) to help protect the core.

I really need something better than stocky~ heatsink....

ok ok i admit it.. the xp120 is awefully big.

How about XP90? it looks.... incredibly beautiful. Would it fit well on Aopen boards?

i wouldn't be surprised if it still needs modified shims/pads.. to protect the beautiful dothan core.

I have the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU on my Aopen board. 92mm fan - Works like a treat. I dont think you need a 120! They are just massive!

No modding necessary for the Zalman btw - straight on.

For the xp-120 you can try to find an old heatspreader of one of the first P4's or something so you don't crack the core. I thought that you can put 80 or 92 mm fan's on the xp-90.

yea.. couple of people recommended me about the Zalman CNPS7000B-ALCU.. looks pretty tempting. Not sure about the cooling performance compare to Thermalright XPxx~ xxx series.

yea, xp120 is way too big.. I'm thinking toward the XP90 instead. I think, with the modified pads on the cpu packaging, this could work... what do you think guys?

The Dothans really don't put out that much heat. Is a thermalright XP90 really giong to be worthwhile or is it just risky business with an expensive CPU?

Why not try an SLK948 thats just as good as an XP90 and you have no chance of cracking anything. Either that or a Swifty or even a zalman

oh yes.... they do get hot once you start oc'ing and vmodding. i'm getting close to 50C @ 2.48ghz @ 1.58v.. The issue I'm getting is the heat. The temp I'm getting just isn't stable to run anything higher clock.

how much temp drop did you get compare to a stocky heatsink?

I dont think that Thermalrights XPs are best choice for passive cooling, Zalman 7K is so good, but my recommemdation is Novatech Alpha 8952, I have quite impressive results with this heatsink  I think good choice could be Scythe Heatlane too, but dont tested - my case is so small for this monster

Zalman Temps with a 1.5Ghz Dothan @ 150X15 (with 1.5 vcore). Also with the Fan on lowest setting so its completely inaudible = 47 celcius. idle. When i game i turn the fan up as i dont care about noise and the highest temps i get are around 54.

Sorry - never tried the stock heatsink. I imagine the fully copper version will give better temps. Plus also in a more airy case you will get lower temps. My mobo is squeezed into a Silverstone LC-11 with no other fans on to keep noise to a minimum, so my temps are likely to be higher than normal.

hmm many people seem to dislike the thermalright xp series.. what do you guys not like about it?..

no worries .. my case is small too. It's a translucent blue mobile acrylic case, size of a brief case. Sounds like you still get about 3~ 4C better than my stock hsf cause i get close to 60C when gaming @ 2.5ghz@ 1.58v vcore. my cpu saz oh it's stuffy hot hot

i would like to have a Pretty heatsink and put a lighted fan on it. First floor is all blue and second floor is red(looks much better in real, not pics). Gives a sense of separation. This is why I don't want ugly/normal looking hsf... i need a pretty one, and something that cools better. I really think the thermalright xp90 is sexy.. That would look good with my case.

Id like Thermalrights so much, but it is not perfect in role of pure passive cooling I think ... For comparison - on my 1.7 GHz @ 2.5 GHz I reach max cca 49C with 8952 passive (mounted fan, but off, near is 8 cm slow exhaust fan in psu) - but at stock voltage ...

Inside US you could buy for superb price from http://www.frozencpu.com/cpu-alp-03.html?id=2fHCrA3I (I bought from EU/Austria, so it was damn pricey). Here is one of trustful reviews http://www.frostytech.com/articlevie...articleID=1577 .

There is one really special with this heatsink - if you mount the fan, you may to mount it reversed (not as intake, but exhaust).

(last - if you google for this, try string "alpha pal8952")

Thermalrights is not so good performers without fan but - sure, with stock voltage it will be good enough. On stock voltages is every full-sized P4 heatsink with Dothan useful (btw: these Dothans critical temperature is cca 100C, so TR will be useful also with much higher voltage but maybe quite hot )

Yes, no Vmod, its a nice piece

Actually pci lock at 33 doesnt work good , still hope for new bios release (or modified), but dont know - Aopen will release a new revision of this mobo with jumper to switch fsb speeds, actually it doesnt looks good with rev.1

In game performance could be Dothan better, overall dont know ... I hit already with this combo 30s in 1M SPI, 29K 3DM01, 14.5K 3DM03, 6.5K 3DM05, 83K Aquamark3. Remember - it was done with stock Vcore and Vdimm 2.5V. Sure, it is not over yet and I will try for more

yes my dothan@ under 2.5g air cooled mops kitchen and bathroom floor with my supercooled p4e s478 3.2@ 4.3 in 3dmark, games, and even in superpi. i get 2000 points more on 3dmark. Dothan@ 2.6ghz gives me 3250 points more than a supercooled p4@ 4.3 w/ same card@ xtpe default clk.. and this is with my dothan at 124~ 130fsb.

so yes.. mopping floor is guaranteed.
