i just got me a dothan system.

but i am confused with the BIOS setting for overclocking and ratios..

I have lots of questions... but let me ask this.....

Does Dothan benefit more on memory overclock or does it benefit more on 1:1 ratio overclock(CPU FSB same as memory clock)? 1:1 is still better... right? yes or no thanx.......

    Thinking about pentium m

you guys know when the new mobos with the alviso is coming out? If i were to get one now, which board would you recommend and why? im leaning towards the aopen because of the heatsink retention frame

been there, done that. i felt exactly the same.. wth is all that stuff? seems totally different from my socket a boards, ...
anyway, 1:1 would probably be optimum, but you'll have a very hard time getting the fsb up into regions where it would pay off. so far i've seen very few really high fsbs past 175 mhz - tyrou (if that is spelled right) has the highest i've seen so far, somewhere around 200.
generally, the higher memory bandwidth you get by using a divider 3:4 or 3:5 (fsb:ram) should do the proc good, because the dothan is basically - as charlie put it a couple of times - starving for bandwidth.
if i were you, i'd try to see what the max overall speed your dothan can run at is, then check where the highest bootable fsb is about and then try maxing the clockspeed with that fsb and the available multipliers. doing that you'll see where your ram is headed with the dividers. if your ram can't handle very high speeds, 3:4 should be ok, if possible try 3:5. but notice that you need to have a vdimm mod to get anything beyond 2.5v out of these boards...

if you need further pointers... like what exactly is all that fsb/ddr/gfx/xxx divider mumbojumbo in the bios, ask. it took me a moment to realize what aopen was trying to tell me with their bios-settings, as there was no such option as 3:4 or 1:1... they had stuff like 400/266/100/250 (WTF???)
translating to (3:4:x:x) fsb (quadpumped) / ram (ddr *2) / onboard gfx low / onboard gfx high. pretty whacky. i'd have preferred a 3:4:x:x setting. (who cares about the onboard gfx anyway )
    ...

    cirthix,
i had the aopen... for about one week, then it died. hmmmm. only thing i think i can safely say is that the dividers did work and pci seemed locked. couldn't really do much in-depth testing. i guess i'm waiting for the alviso boards now.. shouldn't be much longer til the regular desktop boards hit the market.

/edit: spelling, missing letters, some dots, some ... well the usual stuff...
let's say, whatever is still missing or wrong, is left intentionally as it is, to provide later generations with proof of my inability to write, talk and phone at the same time (at work)

thanks for the insight. That helped me a lot. =)

Wish my system allowed me for higher multi. multi of 21x would be cool. My CPU seems to have no problems at 2.4+. I haven't tried 2.5 yet.

I was gonna complain the same thing! It is indeed.... very whacky...

So far, I'm still happy with the board. Perfomance is very good.

    Thanks for the help, sky.

i'd like to run a 1700 at 17(or 16)*166, 1.7v. 166 should reset the agp and pci speeds to 66/33, shouldn't it? is this possible on the majority of boards? will it be possible with alviso?

the funny thing is, with a peltier on it, total power consumption would be about as much as a prescott LOL

Anyone Try RMClock Ultility to see if it works on Dothans... if so then you should be able to change the multiplier in real time with it.

can somebody test that program to see if it can raise the multiplier ABOVE intel's set one. i tried ot on my mobile athlon and nforce2 mobo and it crashed pretty hard, but its a limitiation as i've heard via chipset owners can use speedstep on their desktop cpus

    Vdimm mod for Aopen?

From the earlier posts someone recommended 100K ohm for VDIMM mod? What voltage increase do you get at 100K? Is that for Aopen?... and most importantly, does anyone know where are the points to connect the resister? I need locations... to solder wires know what I mean? I really need the vdimm mod...

anyways... most of you don't seem to talk about Vdimm mod. Are most of you using DDR Booster? I don't have it, and don't want to use it because I have two sticks 256mb winbond BH-5's..

iirc, earlier in the thread we discovered that the ddr booster was a big no-no with both boards.

Well, I've finally put the Dothan 1.8G under my Cascade. With -103C on the CPU, I hit a nice 3318Mhz:

24 secs Super pi at 3.24G, too bad I can't max out my ram as it can bench 280Mhz cas 2, 2, 2, 5, FSB is bottled at 192wall

37.59@ Pifast, fastest Intel on Hexus pifast ATM:

I just wish my fsb aint capped at 190+, or at least I have some divider in between 3:4 and 3:5...
Or if I have 19X multiplier, that would rock!

Thx, Im on the Aopen 855 as stated in the cpuz valid.
The pci/agp lock doesnt work, but it seems according to the clockgen i use, my agp and pci is underclocked when i set to 75/37 or 88/44. At 166fsb my agp is stated as 59 and pci 29 and as i clock her up to 190, its around 63/32

LardArse, i have some questions.. I am getting weird result on the AGP and PCI clock on my Aopen 855. My FSB is at 123 and according to the bios it is set to 66mhz AGP and 33mhz PCI but in clockgen in windows tells me I'm at 41mhz AGP & 20.5mhz PCI. Are you having same issue as well? Wouldn't it cause problems at such low AGP/PCI bus speeds?.. or is the clockgen reading it wrong? What's your thoughts on this?

Are these boards have difficulty running high FSBs due to AGP/PCI clock?

Any tips on how to get higher FSB?

I think clockgen is a bit off but I dont think the agp/pci is locked.... but there are a few dividers that kick in.
If you can lower your multiplier, it would be nice to skip a few steps and jump straight to 167FSB... where I believe the next divider kicks in. With 167fsb, 75agp/37pci, you can give it a try.

on second thoughts of buying a dothan system, i'm gonna wait till summer, alviso shoudl be out and tested by then, and maybe (hoping) intel releases a 1.7ghz celeron m or low voltage 1.7ghz p-m, the 17x multi is all i need. plus, x800xls will be much cheaper/available then, so waiting seems like a good option
