    4x512 BH-5? Should I do it?

I have a 2x512MB Corsair XMS3500C2 v1.1 (BH-5) setup right now that I am running at 250FSB 2-2-2-5. I have a chance to get ANOTHER 2 sticks of the EXACT same DDR modules for an OK price. Anyway, I am looking for some advice here. If I use the other two slots with the memory I will not be able to use my OCZ DDR Booster to try to get higher FSB speeds....but 2GB of BH-5 sounds really sweet. What should I do? Sacrifice a possible better OC for 1GB of memory or go for the whole 2GB?

I heard that it does and does not turn off PAT... Hehe...

Couldnt it be that some people it doesnt work with... Others it does...

But 2GB is to much mem... Hehe... I wouldnt do it... Then rather sell all your ram and get 2x1GB modules...

2gb of memory is OK. i honeslty dont think you will see much improvement in speeds unless your multitasking like freaking crazy..

if i were you i would save that bh5 set for your overclocking PC, and spend the crazy cash and get another system to use.

or maybe a laptop or something more usefull..

agreed, unless you are doing some extremely memory intensive work all the time you dont need 2 gigs. I have 512 megs right now and i havnt seen a real need to get a gig yet (although there are some instances i wish i did have it). Only buy the extra gig if you can ebay it for more. Other than that keep what you have and invest your money else where (like in a fine lady)

    False.
4xDS modules is PAT level 1, best, while 2xDS modules and 4xSS modules is PAT level 2

    I would go for 2GB.

I've run with 4x 512 MB ram in my system for a while, and I'm going to again. Now SiSandra and CPU-Z says PAT is disabled when I run with 4x512, whereas it's supposedly enabled when I run with 2x512 MB.

My ram has never been able to run with GAT settings at anything else than "auto" in the bios. However with the same timings, I get nearly identical performance with 4x512 MB vs 2x512 MB.

However when I do serious stuff on my pc the extra GB really does shine, so to me it would easily be worth a 5-10% decrease in benchmark results for 24/7 use. The good new is though, that everything I tried was well within 2%.

Also running at up to 260 Mhz fsb I noticed zero difference in mainboard stability, although I'd watch that 3.3V rail if you plan on running all your memory @ 250 Mhz. A couple of my psu's really suffered on the 3.3V rail with 2 GB of memory, and I only ran it @ 5/4 at the time.

I'm getting 1 GB of Ballistix PC3200 myself this afternoon hopefully, so I'll be testing how it works along with my bh-5 sticks. I've got an optinon on a couple of bh-5 512 sticks if they dob't "get along". I'm definetely going 2 GB again.

Well. I just put in the Crucial Ballistix memory. So far I'm just running them @ 5/4 along with my HyperX BH-5 with my system @ 252 Mhz fsb, which is my 24/7 setting.

Memtest showed PAT as being disabled as well as CPU_Z and Si Sandra with 4x 512 MB modules in there. However, interestingly enough with just 2x 512 MB and PAT enabled I got an unbuffered speed of 2661 MB/s. With 4x 512 MB modules, same timings (2-2-2-5) and PAT disabled memtest shows 2747 MB/s. So the unbuffered bandwidth has actually increased a bit, at least according to memtest.

Then I just did a quick 3dmark2001se. Interestingly the score declined a bit with 2 GB of memory vs. 1 GB, but honestly it was only 258 points. And whether I get 31.500 or 31.250 isn't really a big deal for me. Even so my score often fluctuates a couple of hundred points anyway, so I'm not at all concerned with the minimal differences I can measure.

Now I'll go play some Doom 3 and see if I can tell a difference

I would buy them regardless. BH-5 is pretty hard to find, & its always nice to have a packup pair sitting around.

You could easily sell them to someone else
    I'd be interested anyway

    hmmm

Given that DOOM3 has a peak commit charge of 950MB....we are approaching the point where 1G wont be enough within a year...get the 2nd G and use it, well worth the investment. I wish the NForce2 MB's had the option, I'd be using 2G in a heartbeat.

Lets keep offers to buy or sell in the classified section, or via PM.

    Thanks.

I DID IT! I just couldn't pass this one up. I bought the BH-5 just now and have some heatspreads on the way too. This is going to be amazing finally moving up to 2GB. I don't care if I lose PAT...screw it. I will, of course, post pictures of the RAM installed (it's gonna be a sweet sight) and before and after SANDRA scores to see if there really is a change.

Alexandrus was right. All for slots populated with doubled-sided (DS) [shown here as "Ranks per DIMM"] memory of the same type is still DC and has PAT enabled...this is shown by Intel to be better than only populating 2 slots for DC...

Its not like you'd ever notice the difference of losing PAT anyway....

Iridium192_217 - did you completely miss that? 4x512 DS with all the same DIMMS is better than 2x512....

Looks to be pretty sweet. Too bad Nforce 3 boards don't have a similar setup.

yes only at 200fsb.. try 201fsb 1:1 though on 875P boards = PAT disabled

So that would mean that nobody has PAT enabled then since no one runs a 200FSB anymore.
