    VLC player channel output

    Hey guys.
I got 2 surround systems connected to my media center, one being 5.0 hifi in my living room (SPDIF optical -> receiver) other being 5.1 Logitech Z5500 in bedroom... (3x minijacker)

So which sound options should I pick... Can it be that A/52 over SPDIF is the optimal for my living room, when watching blu-ray...?
    And 5.1 for bedroom

I honestly thought 5.1 was correct option for living room as well, however, VLC player does not really agree?? Please let me know what you guys got as for experience... Oh and knowledge too, I bet lots of you will beat me to it by miles.

The only way to get surround sound over SPDIF/TOSLINK is to use Dolby Digital/"A/52". Otherwise spdif can only pass stereo PCM.

I thought there were some sound cards that could output 5.1 PCM? I know it isnt officially in the spec, but I could have sword a few cards have the ability

I don't know of any audio receivers that can decode anything else but Dolby Digital or Stereo PCM through S/PDIF.

Solved the riddle, its PCM, and its being decoded as Dolby D(igital) or DTS, depending on movie, when using A/52 over SPDIF

Thats a good point. So there really is no way to get it working properly, just to send out DTS or DD.
