Yeah that's really neat, but the X58 won't stay fresh for long. It's the first one of a new kind, when the 32 nm shows up you'll want X68.
It will stay for years, just like 775 have been around for over 4 years, but in the end it's just useful when reusing heatsinks.
Those who upgraded to a 45 nm C2Q didn't want their P965 anymore.
C2 had 3 chipset generations in 2 years, and they don't work in older mobos even though they have the same socket, remember?

The CPU's aren't over priced, its the motherboards that are over priced. I payed $300 for a quad Xeon=q6600 almost exactly 1 year ago. Still ~$750 for brand new tech is a perfect deal for some and a rip off to others. The new i7 features upgradability which the 775 does not. You have a better chance of having to buy all new hardware if you upgrade sooner then 2 years.

go to ebay/mwave. you can get an i920 for $225, 6gb patriot or g.skill for $190, and the msi board for $155. thats $570. even if you go with a better board for another $75 thats still on par with a decent q9550 machine. why go with older tech when you can get the new stuff for around the same price? i have not heard of any issues with any of the new x58 mainboards. i got my i920 and ram there, and am just waiting for the nf200 evga board to come into stock, and the xigmatek 1366 crossbow kit.

Go to live.com search for Q9550, click on the link that enables cash back for ebay then go to this store.

    http://stores.ebay.com/MultiWaveVideo

Best price I have seen so far, newegg prices 25% off with live cash back.

But if laying out the prices as you have done so is what you need in order to convince yourself you are getting a good deal then by all means do so.
yeah, guess newegg is lying for how much they sell there stuff.

Guess what, the Q6600 is not a 3,6ghz chip, if we talk about ocing a Q6600 has even less chance against a 920.

And no you dont need tri-channel at all... dual channle gives you 21gb/s and thanks to the IMC you also get a good part of that theoretical throughtput, compared to the FSB based C2.

Noone says that the Q6600 rig you posted is bad... but your comparing parts which are in a total different performance and price segments... its like compering a VW golf to a BMW 5 and then start arguing the VW is cheaper then the BMW.

So lets be honest...100 dollars doesn't matter...but then...if I went i7 have a feeling I would be troubleshooting a lot more...right? Cause I don't have the time anymore to deal with that...
I'm repeating myself, but I can only tell you my i7 920 / P6T Deluxe build has been the easiest I have ever done. I started with 3 GB of G.Skill DDR3 mem, because that's all I could find in stock. Installed Vista 64-bit and never had a hiccup. Then my 6GB pack of G.Skill came in, so I swapped out the 1GB X 3 sticks, and again --- never missed a beat.

I'm also not reading about people having lots of issues with the i7 systems, but it obviously is still pretty new. I wouldn't NOT go i7 because you are concerned about problems. That doesn't mean you can't get a lemon board, CPU or RAM, but that can happen with any system. Good Luck.

EDIT: hmmmnnn, I'm now seeing an issue where DIMM slots A1 and A2 don't seem to be working. Everythings else is fine.

ive come to realize that when you start overclocking you start troubleshooting, tweaking this and that to get something else to work yada yada yada. personally i see no reason not to go with the new I7, i mean look how long the LGA775 socket has been around and whats came from it. 1st came HT P4's, then intel's dual core, then intel's quad core. who knows what youll be able to do with the 1366 socket in the future.

i would get a 920, 3gb of ram and the P6T. that will more then likely give you a platform that you can upgrade on for ~4 years (time from it coming out til they make something new). which right there its a top of the line system reguardless. as long as you have a solid platform to build on (like the P6T) your not going to have many problems.

    Realize this...

    1) Core i7 processors are competitive with Core 2 Quad processors.
    2) X58 motherboards are competitive with X48 motherboards
    3) DDR3 1333 is NOT competitive with DDR2.

If you can afford the price premiums, I'd say 100% Core i7. DDR3 is the future, DDR3 1333 will let you overclock to a 222MHz reference bus--which affords you 4.44GHz. On air, that's probably not achievable, which is where a 166MHz reference clock for 3.33GHz on stock should be easily done. If you can afford the cooling, DDR3 1600 is at a much higher premium and is better. That's not even counting OC'ing memory. Slacken timings, boost clock speed.
