    Scythe Infinity, E6600, Asus P5B Deluxe....My system, PICS, REVIEW!!!!

    Hey, i received my Scythe Infinity today to replace my Big Typhoon, also i put some AS5 on the NB and SB chipsets................

    When i removed the NB cooler i found out that half of the heatsink wasnt even making contact, if you scroll down you will see how bad this is, i was preety disapointed when i saw that, QC? in ASUS that bad? anyway here are the results from my Big Typhoon and the Scythe Infinity, both using the same settings and same fan, all the hype about the Infinity blowing the Big Typhoon away, today i find out its all BS.....who ever had big differences in temps must have not had it making full contact or was just plain BS..........here are the results.............

    TEST SYSTEM is in my SIG. with all settings as you see in my SIG.

    AMBIENT TEMP 76f, Used a Thermaltake 93cfm 2700rpm fan.

    3.6ghz 1.46v (400x9)
    Scythe Infinity
    idle = 38
    load = 56

    Big Typhoon
    idle = 40
    load = 59

    As you can see the Scythe Infinity is a great cooler..........but it does not kick the Big Typhoons BUTT, as other have claimed....if you already own a Big Typhoon, a heatsink upgrade isn not needed, as the difference is only a couple of degrees, if you use the same fan........overall im happy with this product and i am very happy with my setup as of now..............

    Check out some PICS!!!!!!!!!! i know everyone loves pics

    Hopefully this will give people of an understanding about these 2 heatsinks.

    nice review
    imho, the infinity is too heavy for the retention mechanism. (except if you run open bench, horizontal)

    good read

    however, using the same fan of both heatsinks isn't completely indicative of infinity's performance

    Honestly i used to think the same thing, but when i installed it, i held it sideways from the heatsink, i know thats dangerous but it was on preety tight and didnt move or get loose, so the mechanism works preety good.

    No its using a 2700rpm 80cfm thermaltake fan, its not the greatest but its about 2-4c better then the stock.

    oh nvm i have 80CFM fan right now its 5c better, the 110CFM is like 7c ... according to DS3, i just tested with stock vs 110CFM n got 7c difference in full load, idle was like4-5c better for 110CFM

    then i decide it was too loud so i just used the no name brand 80CFM its about 5 better than stock fan for me

    Thank you for the honest review of the 2 coolers! I have a Thermaltake Big Typhoon VX that comes stock with an 86.5CFM fan and wondered how it truly compared with the Scythe Infinity.

    No problem at all, the VX will probably perform very close to this heatsink, maybe couple of degrees hotter, but that wont make any difference in reality....enless you look at numbers.

    I did claim that Infinity kicks butt

    You are running low vcore, try running 1.55+ and the difference will be bigger

    Good pics and review. About the retention of Scythe, it just sux, why ? I had a Scythe Mine, its hard to press the holds, its even harder when you wanna remove it, and a pair of them just broke off themselves one day... Too much pressure for such a little plastic thing... Just my 2cents...

    As for the bad contact, its coz the heatpipe, it will make the Heatsink to "lift" from the core, do i explain me ? I dont know the exact meaning in english, a bit of pressure and it will do good contact i guess.

    Regards!

    BTW I like the Ultra 120 better

    Kind of offtopic but I have been wondering this for some time now. What the hell keeps those monster coolers in place (when all the components are vertically in a PC not somewhere on a table) and from breaking off a piece of the motherboard? Are those backplate thingies all that there is?

    Haha, ooh...for the Infinity, there is no backplate. All that's holding the Infinity down is the stock Intel HSF retention mechanism; just four not-so-secure looking plastic push-pins holds down that 960g behemoth.

    According to Scythe, the Infinity shouldn't break the motherboard when it's just standing there. However, it can break when you're moving your PC in its normal vertical position; when moving a PC with the Infinity installed, therefore, transport it horizontally (on it's side, like a test bench PC would be like).

    Let me tell you my horror story about the Infinity, installed it on the AW9D MAX and my luck I got a bad board so I had to uninstall it, well that is not an easy task on the AW9D MAX because you can not get your fingers behind the cooler to turn the pushpins to release it as the otis heat sink sits right up to the cooler.

    I strongly suggest that if you own the AW9D MAX do not install this cooler, unless you never plain to remove it After I got the stupid thing off it went right to the trash.

    Also for everyone who went to Anand Tech for the preview of the AW9D MAX and seen this cooler installed on his pic of the board, forget it!! Maybe he had a deal with Scythe to display it. The fan is not even pointed in the proper direction unless you want to heat up your gpu even more.

    Man, that sucks, got a Infinity here and one of the reasons why I wanted the AW9D Max over the p5w was that I didn't want to modify the infinity with a dremel. Guess I'll just replace the Otis thermal pads with AS5 and pray that the board isn't bad.

    It's a great cooler, but not a lot of real estate around that cpu.

    Actually, the issue isn't now, it's after a few months of constant pressure in one direction.

    is something as ludicrous as the infinity even necessary? I thought one of the benefits of conroe was the lower heat generation. can't something like an si-120 or big typhoon do the job?

    Big Typhoon is one of the best heatsiniks around, so is the SI 128 because they also cool your ram, NB chipset, and the pwmic chips as well, the tower heatsinks like the infinity do not cool other components, so they generate more heat from your board, so overall your better off with a cooler that blows down on your board, especially with a 120mm fan....i personally love the Big Typhoon, i have had many coolers, and none perform better than this one, overall performance, im not talking about just the cpu down by 2 degrees, but your ram and other components run hot, with the typhoon its an overall great cooler.

    Gar,

    Would you agree to change the Thermaltake Big Typhoon's stock fan. Something that can push more air and be quieter at the same time. I'm just curious.

    Yeah for sure change it, im using a 93cfm 2700rpm thermaltake fan, but it is kinda loud.....anything that moves alot of air is going to be kind of loud....but defanetly change the fan

    You have pretty good temperatures, i can´t even get close to that. Tried all day but still 2c short at least. Lapped heatsink, ihs, used as5 and liquid metal, the best i could get was 58c at 3,6ghz 1,4625v in bios. Ambient 23c

    Ahhh I'm not even sure what to get anymore. I read Kiwi's thread that the TTBT cooled better, and now I'm reading your thread that the Infinity cools better by a little. I'm so confused

    Yeah I think I'm just gonna go with the Ultra 120 :/.
