    Intel P4 Mobile 1.6 Shows Multiper as 16X **UNLOCKED** ???

    I just got a P4 Mobile 1.6GHZ of of ebay SL6EX , well this sucker defaults
    to 16X I thought this was going to be locked at 12X..

    I'm running it off a ASUS p4p800-e Deluxe with 1009.003 bios.

    Now is this common or NOT ? Goiing to pick up another P4 Mobile just to verify that it's the cpu not the board or the bios.

    me thinks ur bios is a lil funky .... or you just got lucky ... keep it in there for a lil while. restart ur computer see if it still has 16x multi in windows

    I just flashed the bios to P4P800 SE and still the same thing..
    Locked at 16X in bios Can't lower it or increase the Multipier..

    I flashed it to get a Pentium M 479 Adapter for the AGP/PCI LOCK soon, but
    It looks like this P4 Mobile kicking ass, @ 160 FSB I haven't ever tried higher FSB Yet, Did increase the Vcore to 1.65 V in the bios..

    CPU Temps reported by the sensor is 30 degrees..
    I will take pics of the numbers on the cpu in a few days..

    So this is a rare thing?

    Dunno. Funny I tried yesterday a p4m 1,6 in my gigabyte ga-8ik1100 and it runs with a 12x mp because the lack of speedstep. Didn't oc it. @ 1,2 it was slow as hell, now back on my 3,0 northwood.

    Isn't this cpu supposed to be 16*100 = 1600mhz?

    I think I know why adjusting the multiplier doesn't work. I don't think it is supported by the Asus motherboards, it should only work with Dothans. Speedstep might work though. But I'm fairly sure it should be 16*100 at stock. Doesn't it boot at 16*100 = 1600mhz?

    yes, but in every other case, the cpu defaults to the lowest speedstep multiplier(12x) when it's in a desktop board. For some reason, he's getting the full 16x

    I think it's a matter of "dothan/CT479-bios" that sort of supports the Mobile P4 (NW) better than other Bios'es in other MB's..
    Haven't tried/tested this myself, but I (also) bought a Mobile P4 (1.6Ghz) a while ago.. just to test it in a Abit VT7 (PT880) board..
    Sure.. it boots at 12x100 but easily runs at 12x200. Have searched (Google) about this CPU and it should be possible to "force" it to run at 16x with a "pin-mod" (remove one of the pins.. if I remember correctly).
    Asus/CT-479 boards probably has Bios'es that enables this ("CPU microcode") by "software", that is.. , it identifies correct "default" MP but not "speedstep".
    Just my guess though..

    that's definately a mobile...maybe the bios just thinks its a normal p4

    Weird, cpuz reports mine also as a p4m. (it's a sl5yu) Bios says it's a Xeon

    CPUz says my old laptop had a Dublin core Opteron.

    Well, sorry I dig up this old thread, bud I think I've found a way to set it @ a 16x mp.
    According to intels datasheet Pin A6 is the GHI# pin:
    The GHI# signal controls the selection of the operating mode bus ratio and voltage in the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor-M. On the Mobile Intel Pentium 4 Processor-M featuring Enhanced Intel SpeedStep technology, this signal is latched on entry to Sleep state and is observed during the Deep Sleep state. GHI# determines which of two performance states is selected for operation. This signal is ignored when the processor is not in the Deep Sleep state. This signal should be driven with an Open-drain driver. Refer to the Mobile Intel Pentium 4
    Processor-M and Intel 845MP/845MZ Chipset Platform Design Guide for termination and connection guidelines.
    And another quote from datasheet:
    The processor has two bus ratios and voltages programmed into it instead of one and the GHI# signal controls which bus ratio and voltage is used. After reset, the processor will start in the lower of its two core frequencies, the “Battery Optimized” mode. An operating mode transition to the high core frequency can be made by setting GHI# low, putting the processor into the Deep Sleep state, regulating to the new VID output, and returning to the Normal state. This puts the processor into the high core frequency, or “Maximum Performance” operating mode. Going through these steps with GHI# set high, transitions the processor back to the low core frequency operating mode.
    As far as I can see, you only have to remove this pin, but I'm not 100% sure. I need to check some things before I gonna try it myself. If I know more, I will post it.

    It might be possible to just put something in the socket to prevent it from seeing the pin. I'd not chance physically removing a pin. I always like a way out. Maybe just connect the pin to the nearest VSS (ground)?

    Hehe, my idea (the first you say) But connecting it to vss won't work I think.

    If im right, the signal on the pin is high, when mp should be 12. So I gonna check that with a multimeter when system is on. If pin A6 is indeed high, I think insulating or removing will do the trick.

    I am running a p4 1.6m but I am runnig for low heat and low power. This cpu is locked at 16x. And I also got the Asus p4p800 deluxe.

    Unfortunatly it seems to be not as simple as I hoped. A6 is indeed high, 1,65v. But removing the pin didn't change the mp to 16x. Processor works perfect as far as I can see, but I think speedstep won't work when placed in a notebook. (but who cares, 1,6 GHz is slow as hell with a northwood )

    I gonna search for another way, but I'm afraid it won't be possible witout bios support.

    Quick update I got another P4 Mobile, same stepping
    still reads 16X With multiplier LOCKED

    I guessing it's the bios / motherboard not a ES CPU

    I Have another board to test it on ASUS P4P800S, will try that some day..
    and see what happens.

    THIS ONE CLOCKS PRETTY GOOD FOR A P4 MOBILE...

    i have a p4 2.4ghz northwood mobile chip, cant do anything with it(have no hardware) but i have one. fits into a normal desktop board.

    Did a quick search it's a OEM CPU, and it may just NOT Support speed step hence why it defaults to 16X
