    Pump Question MCP600/AX 50Z-dc12

I was wondering if this pump can be undervolted by any fair amount. The one I have now is a tiny bit loud, Id like to undervolt it. How do these pumps react to that?

I know that it wont run @ 7v with the 7v trick on the psu.

    Any sugestions?

I know its a stepper motor in there.

ive never heard of a 50z being undervolted before, i assume it could be done if it wasnt too much
i would consider getting some neoprene and coating it in that or some sound dampening foam, because depending on how much you undervolt the performance loss could be significant

Looks like insulating it is the best route.

    Thanks guys.

I put it under 3/4inch insulation. And it still humms and makes noise.....

Im thinking of replacing it with the mcp 650 I was just ofered as those pumps can be undervolted and this thing dosent respond at all to undervolting. It dosent run at all on 7v.

im well aware of whine issue. My buddy owns one. But after droping its voltage to around 9-10v the whining stops and it becomes dead quiet. At the expense of performance that is. But even with lower voltages his cpu dosent get any hotter because of the nature of his loop. (mostly hard lined) The thing I like about the 650/655 is that it dosent make any mechanical noise like vibrations etc.

fyi, the 50Z will do 10V as well.. DDC/D5/D4/50Z all will take about 10v minimum. below that they wont start up.

and i meant to COVER the 50Z in dynamat.. u will NOT be able to hear it. hell, mine is sitting on the carpet right now and I cant hear it uninsulated.

I covered it with insulation thats thicker than dynamat. The problem is that its mounted so ridgitly its resonating. Ill try to fix the problem again lader on tonite.

I insulated it completly bottom top rear and front. The problem is that its resonating through the case and into the desk. I have to get some felt pads for the feet of the case. It should dampen it enough now to make it completly silent.

A question about the 50Z...I saw on Cooltechnica that there are different fitings on the 50Z...I was just wondering if the fitings can be changed or it is fixed on the pump...

fixed on the pump. ither the 3/8" NPT or the barbs. both are fixed. if u get the NPT (I dont suggest it) you can buy 3/8" NPT threaded female fittings with any barb size u want (1/4 to 5/8") .
