    Micron 5B D overclocking! 1gb value ram at 251mhz

I have recommended 1024mb sticks of Crucial Value to many people lately (not here ), with the assumption that it will overclock well, and go down to tight timings at stock speeds, but without really knowing for sure. This uncertaincy bothered me, so I ended up ordering a stick of the stuff from newegg on thursday (6-16-05), and it got here on the next tuesday (yesterday now)

here's a nice pretty picture, showing the high density -5B D chips:

I have been somewhat busy since then, but despite this, the ram has been pushed to it's limits when I had the time. Before I start off with the screens, I'll say some things that I have found.

    1. Voltage.. doesn't do anywhere near as much as I was expecting.. not until I get to the upper mhz at least. In some cases (2.5-2-2), 2.6-2.7v was optimal
    2. Timings. I was expecting better overclocking at tight timings than what I got. The fact that it actually does do tight timings is awesome, but some more headroom would make me feel better
    3. Mhz scaling. Considering the oc'ing results of the other 'good' 1gb sticks (exluding ballistix, which is basically the top bin of the chips that go into the value ram), this stuff impresses me. That said, it's nowhere near as good as a 512mb stick would be, mostly in regards to the timings needed.

Now, for the things that I managed to pull off with the stuff being memtest stable so far (or very very close to it. any errors = bad, and i go back to retweak)

Tightest timings possible without going under 200mhz: 2.5-2-2
This.. was easy to do, but hard to find the top end, as Vdimm and various secondary timings were fiddled with for a long time trying to eek out those last 3mhz :p

Next, trying to find the next lowest set of timings that would yeild the biggest mhz increase. This turned out to be increasing Trcd to 3 for 2.5-3-2. This yeilded a decent increase in clocks over 203mhz

After this, a bit of tweaking was done. 2.5-3-3 only got me to 224mhz, and 3-3-2 was the same, so 3-3-3 it is! Note that one of the secondary timings was relaxed a bit to accomodate the speed. I'm kinda surprised that nothing else really needed tweaking aside from the two latency settins (max async and read preamble)

and now! something to make all you high voltage fans happy :p
voltage does NOTHING! I went from 251mhz at 2.8v to 257mhz at 3.1v.. just 6mhz?!

and for the higher timings/mhz crowd.. again, nothing! i think this is partially my mobo's fault though, being weird with ram, but i couldn't get any higher at 3-4-4 than 3-3-3

to all you that go to [H] too, sorry for the direct copy

I had a (512mb) stick of the same stuff before i switched to TCCD, and it did 270mhz @ 3-3-3-10 @ 2.70v so it's obviously not bad stuff!

nice CD, that confirms my suspicion that the stuff works a bit better in single sided dimms..

now the real question is how does the higher bin do (1gb ballistix)

Nice oc for a single channel 1 gig stick. I have Patriot 2x 1 gig in my system and I am maxed out at 223 3-3-3-8 and its not 100% stable. Just allows me to bench. I would imagin those in dual channel would be bout the same place.

is it still worth running cas 3 nowadays? I thought nobody buys that stuff anymore?

I'm asking because I have some sticks that do those kinds of timings, enabling higher speeds, but is it worth it compared to something like 2-2-2-5 at 250MHz?

    Thanks!

with on-die a64 mem controllers it doesnt really matter much, its not really cas latency you have to worry about most anyways,

memtest stable, yup.. i haven't actually done anything hardcore in windows to really make sure, as after that i put in my two stick of ballistix and went with 2gb (220mhz, 2.5-3-2 )

    and it's s754, single channel

well im almost guaranteed a few more mhz in dual channel 939 mode because of the weak mem controller on s754 with two sticks now i just have to sell my gskill 4400le that does 300 2.5-3-3 and my ballistix pc 4000 both 2x512

    sexy

i'll be keeping an eye out for how you do.. i have a friend who is getting 2x1gb tracer, so the 5b D data should be much.. larger

Yeah, there's another thread here with someone who just got the Tracer stuff.

I was thinking about the Tracer, but I figured it wasn't worth the money and I read somewhere that the LED part of the RAM can't take too much voltage, meaning I couldn't run much more that 3.0V, supposedly (though these don't need much more than TCCx for the most part).

For more 5B D data, there was a guy at FM (the data was also posted here) who has some excellent numbers with his 2x1GB Ballistix (so good they convinced me to spend double the price of this stuff!).

EDIT: TigerDirect just got in the 4400+ I've been waiting for...looks like we might have some extra data by the end of next week from me.

Micron mem chips begin to give errors with temps over 65C so any thing over 3.0V you will need some sort of ram sinks and a fan over them to keep them under 65C. I have a 512 dimm of -5B rev C and with out ram sinks I was stuck with 250 3,4,4,11, T1 or 230,2.5,2,2,5,T1. With the ram sinks now I get 250,2.5,2,2,5,T1 at 3.3V 100% stable now so It could be a heat problem holding you back.

if that's aimed at me, i know. my 1gb stick puts out a lot of heat when i start bumping up the voltage.

i definitly do keep it cool though:

Ahhh....I want some but newegg now lists them under this part number now, as opposed to what you have above.

Are the ballistix DDR500 1GB sticks just these chips binned at a higher speed?

From what I gather, they use diff chips. These are 5B D, the ballistix use 5B G. Now, they list on the sticky that these may also have 5B G too, so maybe. But this guy didn't get the G's, rather the D's, but it's looking good.

    I hope to get 250 3-3-3-10 1T.
