I got the (unofficial) prices of the lower end Athlon 64 "Venice" processors from the AMD Opteron/Dual-Core launch this morning.

I'll be in Akihabara tomorrow to check out some stores as well. Bless may still have the 3700+, but other stores have sold out.

In Akihabara you can usually haggle the prices a bit but probably not on these chips as they are new. I recommend for a lot of non-Japanese that they should probably visit Laox: The Computer Kan. They've got a massive selection at pretty reasonable prices and English speaking staff. It's just down the street and around the corner from the station and Sega Hi Tech Land (game centre/arcade).

T-Zone Minami is another relatively inexpensive shop with English speaking staff. These two are pretty big stores with hardware spanning across several floors (T-Zone has 7 floors of computer stuff) These bigger stores will give you a good idea of selection and prices.

You obviously don't need to buy right away as you can still check out the hundred other shops in the area . I usually spend morning to night (at least 8-10 hours) when I make a day-trip out to Akihabara, but then again I'm also interested in gadgets, anime, console gaming, jpop and other things .

This is disappointing if that is all they got. Not even 2.8 GHz and a SuperPi many of us already have with Winchester.

He mentions that he is only part way through testing and got it up to 2876mhz @ 1.43v in smart guardian on air SO FAR with more to come... that isn't too shabby at that voltage...

Alright, that is then what I am hoping for. It has to break 2.8 GHz else it is no gain for me.

You know voltage doesn't matter as they say no matter what you put in Venice you gain nothing unless you use negative temperatures. So 1.43V or 1.7V ot 2V is all the same. I experience something similar with my old TPAW but there is still some gain on more voltage.

it's still nice though to run lower voltages for the long term for the life of the chip and less heat

Very sensible. I didn't order anything, have money ready for 3200 but I am not buying unless this on general can run at least 2.8 GHz on air. I don't care about get screenshot and die records, just about stable 2.8+ GHz. I had a luck of getting one TPAW and still have one more CBBID so no need for more crap.
Don't have to stay with AMD at all, I switched to AMD 6-7 years ago because of prices, I'll easily go back to Intel if AMD intends to suck my wallet as it is. The dual core prices are outrageous to say at least.

My current system will probably hold pretty well through venice fever till I change to dual core. I will pass on current single core cpu. When I will do next upgrade everything should much cheaper.
