removal of IHS, is it ok to do this for air cooling?

I just read the sticky for the removal of the IHS, I have a 3.0c SL6WK Malay 30 capper, I was wondering if removing this would be of any benifit since I am air cooling with an XP-90? I am planning on water cooling but not for a few months, after the holidays.

Yes it will benefit you in the way of having lower temps and maybe an increased overclock

ok, great then. I wasn't sure if this was something that was done for just watercooled or more extremely cooled systems. thanks for the reply!

IHS = the big heatsinks you can see on the topside of the CPU. It has stepping etc written all over it.. Underneth the heatsinks you´ll find the cpu.. removing heatsink / IHS will bring your cooler on top of the CPU. And that would bring you better temp´s.

Now, that made sens, but is it much lower temp, i can benefit from it, or is it not worth the time ?

Well hard to say. Around 3-5c benefit in general. Lower temps. are always a benefit. Its impossible for me to answer if its worth your time.

Just make sure you don't crush the newly exposed core when you mount your cooler if you decide to remove the IHS. That is one disadvantage of removing it, but can be easily avoided by taking special care not to be brutish .

I had a p4 2.26 with a june/04 pack date that had the IHS glued to the core. If it acts like it doesn't want to come off after you cut the glue on the outside edge of the IHS it's prolly glued onto the core... Be damn careful! I decided at that point not to persue it any further and just lapped the IHS.

30 cappers are most likely M0 stepping....the IHS is epoxyed on and will not come off. I would not suggest trying this. The best you can do is lap is down really thin....maybe even to the die.

thanks for the heads up, too bad then, this chip runs so much hotter than the 2 X 2.4c's I have, even at a much lower voltage. Wonder why?

removiong the ihs is simple really.. with a nice box cutter or x-acto knife it shouldn't be too hard.. consider it as dificult as removing a shim for an 9800pro.. maybe a bit dificult the first time, but once you get the hang of it, you can do it 100 times!

btw after you remove it.. you'll see a little die... a tiny black little basterd sorrounded by trace lines thast the cpu

btw depending on the smoothness of the ihs initially your temps can drop from 2c-7c in some cases.. you could always lap the ihs.. it would be safer.. and almost as effective..
