Phenom II 550be... stock heatsink good enough?

I just finished building a PC with this CPU and the GA-770TA-UD3 .. amazing motherboard btw.

Now there is one slight problem. I *think* when the CPU is reaching a certain temperature the rig is instantly shutting down.

Highest temp reported via hwmonitor of the CPU socket is 56°C before this thing goes out. Haven't managed to get core readings working but I am guessing the core is much higher.

The problem is I hit this heat "limit" quite easily with the stock HSF if I enable all 4 cores and undervolt the cpu to 1.25v. With 3 cores and that voltage, it will always stay below it.

Is this shutdown a result of thermal protection kicking in and I need a new heatsink (the stock seemed like crap anyways), or is it something else that others have experience?

The stock cooler for the 550 is awful. You must be nuts running a quad on it!

The safe temp for a 550 is 70 and 955 is 62C. I assume the B50 would have the same stats as the 955.

Running as a x2 550 you're not having any problems with temps? I'm running the DDR2 version of your board and have no problems with it; with stock cooler my CPU was hitting upto 58 core temp if i remember correctly in an oven case.

I have the coolmaster hyper-212 plus running on the same board in a thermaltake V9 case. Massive size, but my temps stay under 50, I had to remove the side fan to get the hyper 212 to fit in the case.

The stock HS is for stock cpu... Even when Unlocked to x4cores its barely enuff cooling while priming with Stock HS on stock clocks.

the stock heatsink with heat pipes that came with my 965 wasnt enough to keep it cool, it wasnt unstable at stock speeds with the stock cooler but it would reach into the 60's even at 1.25 volts, so the stock heatsinks r JUNK, even at stock speeds at least with a quad core CPU, on my water setup i can run stock speeds at 1.25 volts at 37 deg full load....almost a 30 deg drop from the stock cooler lmao, i can run 4.1 at 1.55 volts and a nb of 2850 at 1.35 volts and keep it below 50 deg, that is still even way cooler then the stock heatsink/stock clocks, i guess what i am getting at is if u plan on overclocking/unlocking or even running at stock speeds with high loads upgrade your heatsink

i have the same mobo, its amzeing, unlocked 550 without any changes to volts. plus all the 3.0 stuff :P not to mention the bios backups and enternet testing!

I have to admit for the price, this board is simply outstanding. There are no words to describe it, I love every millimeter of it!

I used to hate Gigabyte because of their BIOSes, but I have to say that has changed by leaps and bounds...

i do find it weird that the voltage regulatroes dont come with a heatsink tho

I was surprised too.. until I felt them with my finger. In a mediocre case they barely reach 35°C!

i know still find it a little odd tho. when i get a new job i may want to get a heatsink for it, i dont really trust liquid cooling yet. for a few reasons. pump problem, leak problems(this one is key). no matter how "leakproof" they are i will not trust them. when willl mini AC's be invented that strap right on the devices?!

i´m running a watercooled cpu and 4870x2 for over a year now.
watercooling my rigs for 4years now and never had a leaking problem. u just have to set them up carefully and they are fool proof.
and if, one day, the pump or fans on the radiator are failing, it´s not going to get as hot that fast as when u have a failing fan on an aircooler.

there are "mini ac´s" for pc´s. but they don´t cool air, they are used directly on the cpu. it´s called phase change. google for vapochill and u´ll find them

    back to topic...

a friend of mine just built his first rig with a 550be and of course he wants to unlock it. he´s not really into overclocking so he will leave the clocks at stock.
would u think a stock 955 or 965 cooler would cool an unlocked 550?
at least it´s 100mhz under the clocks of a 955 which the cooler was designed for.
i´ve got two of those coolers, so i´ll give him one if that´s helping to get a stable unlock.

I think if it is all aluminum then it needs to be replaced. If it has a copper core/heatpipes it should be ok...
