Tuning PC's for speed...Run whats fast, not what you think is fast
The chipset is the issue, heat kicks in really early and unless you are watercooled you are going to see issues keeping it cool enough.
CPU's with at least a 10 multi are really needed on this platform, FSB overclocking is just tooo hard with quads for my liking.
Also remember tRFC, tune it correctly to bring vdimm down and in many cases chipset voltage also

I spent some of this weekend playing with this board and an E8500 under phase change. Still using the 1001 bios.
Even with a couple of fans pointing at the Northbridge, the highest FSB I could get the system to boot into windows at was 485 (1980). Memory latency takes a big hit once you go above 450, so the performance hit above there isn't worth taking. With the fans, the heatsink on the Northbridge doesn't actually feel that hot to touch (i.e. no burns on my fingertips yet!), but as voltage gets even a little above 1.5 bios reports northbridge temps going into 60s.
On my board, no amount of playing with (i.e. raising) voltages and slackening off memory timings could get this thing to boot above 500FSB. This a bit fustrating because it seems like this E8500 chip has more to give, but I am FSB limited by the board at 450 X 9.5 = 4.3ghz. Meanwhile my QX9650 needs lots of volts to run stable at 450X10. Ho hum...

When i use coretemp at idle it shows temp reading 28c 38c,should their be that much difference between the 2 cores?
At loads teasting ie: OCCT,Prime95 it goes up to 38c 48c.
Atm im just using the AI overclock in bios 20% OC
CPUZ shows it as 3.6 multi 9x bus 400.0 mhz rated bus 1600.1 mhz. core V 1.232
So far ive been unable to reach any higher on my own an run stable playing games is the only reason this comp is built for.
Also ive take the HS setup off of the MB an redid it with IC diamond then A5 silver, temps are basicly the same(between the diff TP) tho far lower than the stock setup.
Was hoping to reach 4.0 stable to play games as thats all i care for.
mechachrome, what was the temp difference after redoing the northbridge paste compared to stock?
regarding your core temp difference, you could redo the cpu tp and check for correct securing of the HS screws
i posted my bios settings on the previous page and hit 3.6 with only a nb volt increase (using the bios tweaks). they may or may not work for your setup but should provide a good starting point. keep in mind you may encounter fsb holes that no amount of voltage will overcome.

Let me start out ... I'm glad those aren't brains.
Alright, I am new to overclocking, I know just enough about building computers to be dangerous to myself and others I hope you don't mind helping out a noob, hopefully I won't be a noob for too long.
This is my 4'th Asus build over the years, hope I didn't pick a wrong board.
I built my Striker II E8400 about 10 days ago. Used Ai boost go give it a small overclock to 350 = 3.2ghz and about 1400ish fsb. I used 2 gigs of ocz 1066memory, I have 4 gigs but can only get 2 to post, either of pairs of sticks will post but not both. I have been stable like this for 10 days now.
I have not done much in bios since I am not sure exactly how to clear cmos even though there is a button on the back, do you hold it down without power, does it have to be done for 1 sec or 30 sec? At least using soft ware it reverts back if it crashes if your over aggressive, mine will crash at about 360 cpu clock. I did raise the memory voltage to 2.2 requested by the spec on the memory. I am using the Zaleman 120 mm fan, 1000w ps with 2 8800 gts (92)s in sli. The whole reason for this particular build. Almost waited for x48 and going single card. But couldn't resist SLI.
I would like to try to unlink the cpu and get a little more out of it and leave the fsb behind but not real sure how to do that, unlinked I am guessing, some of the bios terminology is a bit confusing to me.
Someone mentioned the auto settings on the ram sucked .. how do you tell what the auto settings are? I should set mine to 55515 2t but have left them on auto for now. I would like to get the other 2 Gigs of ram working even though I have 32 bit vista and will only gain 1 gig acording to what I have read with the 2 512's.
Right now my win mark is 15k wouldnt mind getting a bit more out of this rig just for the fun of it. My temps seem to be on the reasonable side from reading this thread.
So anyhelp would be appreciated. If this is the wrong forum for this let me know.
Mechcachrome and Webrider - hi guys. If you are using the AI boost function to overclock your CPU and want to do more, you need to get yourself a bit more informed on how this stuff works. There are probably lots of places where you can read up on this, but you could start with the document below - it was written for reference 680i boards, but the principles involved in overclocking the 780i boards are the same. Once you are on top of the issues of FSB, multiplier, Vcore, linked versus unlinked memory and the like, you'll find help to more specifc questions on this forum.
http://www.nvidia.com/docs/CP/45121/...erclocking.pdf
Hope that helps...

Hmm so i sholdnt be getting a 10c diff between cores i take it?
Stock it was in the 50's underload so i checked the Asus forums an some ppl mentioned rediong the TP on the heatsinks. Also i redid the CPU cooler an still get the same readings, the Zalman setup only has 2 screws to lock the cooler inplace over the cpu.
Also thanks for the link i will be reading up on it as to get a better understanding of this new setup.
webrider, a vista patch may help. i used KB929777 to solve my 4 gig problem under vista64. Memset3.4 will give you most of the memory settings.
mecha, the core temp diff. in itself will cause no harm. you just won't have as much head room at load temps...

Ok so I've had this board for a little more than a week and have found the following:
1) poor stability using Kentsfield quads / Q6600 - max stable OC 3200MHz @ 356*9
2) poor stability using 4GB memory causing frequent BSODS in vista 64
3) finicky at certain FSB settings; general instability and BSODS from around 433-452
4) almost unsurpassable heat issues with NB reaching 74 degrees and system instability with V_NB at 1.48 (required for high FSB settings)
=>using 1x90mm fan over NB; both Asus chipset fans on MOSFETS; 3x120mm intake fans and 1x120mm and 1x80mm exhaust fans...
(WC CPU and both GPUs should also keep case temps down)
Max FSB for windows boot: 470 (V_NB 1.48, V_SB=1.65, CPU PLL=1.80)
Max stable FSB: 458 (same settings)
Max CPU MHz for super-pi 32M: 3780MHz (420*9)
Max stable CPU MHz for day-to-day use: 3600MHz (400*9)
=>Everest system test (CPU, RAM, FSB, cache) 16 hr stable

Is that 1001 beta bios better?
Settings:
Cpu Volt: 1.25000v
Cpu PLL Volt: 1,50v
Cpu VTT Volt: 1.20v
Memory Volt: 2.20v
NB Core Volt: 1.20v
SB Core Volt: 1.50v
1.2v HT volt: 1.20
Bridge Core Voltage: 1.20v
I have also questions.
When do i need to raise the Cpu PLL voltage?
When do i need to raise the cpu vtt voltage?
When do i need to raise the NB & SB core voltage.
I have already clocked my cpu
I can`t go higher then 328mhz, 329mhz will freez the system.
I have tried higher v-core on 1.3volt but doesn`t work. What to do? More volt on the cpu PLL and Vtt? Need to get higher.

With higher Pll voltage the cpu reacts a lot better. But i still can't get higher
329 Mhz will freez. Vtt voltage haven't much effect on the cpu. Yet i have bios 0101, because bios version 0902 wasn`t that good to overclock with the conroe. But i have to try that Beta 1101 bios, maybe its a lot better. Had already tried a lower multiplier, but doesn`t getting higher on the front side bus.

Is the mulitplier for the E8400 locked. After reading the pdf link provided earlier that seems to be what I am looking for. I'm ok with 350 x 4 = 1400 fsb.
I could get the processor to 3.5, that seemes like a modest overclock.
Still would like to be shure how to clear cmos if it doesn't post.
i'm looking for chipset / mosfet block recommendations. suggestions?
i haven't once had to clear the cmos after many post fails while tweaking bios settings. the board just boots right back up at stock speed but all your bios settings remain unchanged making it very hassel-free. but yes there is a cmos reset button on the external i/o plate.
