What's the melting point of the solder anyway, 90c?
If so I could put some boiling water onto it, that's like 100c

True... but with 100c the cpu definitely will not die... with your method overheating it is still possible... man I want that IHS off real bad

    Garrett,
Although I wasn't able to find it I remember reading about a member here trying to remove his IHS using boiling water, he just submerged the chip right into the water! I also don't remember what kind of luck he had with it, probably not much! People have tried many different ways to remove the IHS but very few if any were successful like Rubiconx3 was! I think the trick was having even and constant pressure on the IHS during the whole heating process, that way once the solder melted it would pull apart. Most people end up heating the IHS up enough to melt the solder but by the time they get something under the IHS to pull, the solder had already gone back to a solid/semi-solid state? I think this is why so many people end up pulling the die right off with the IHS, lol! Tricky business although I'm now very tempted to try!

@ Garrett : I know you can melt solder with a lighter . if the boiling water method works make sure you post it =)

Yup i used the 4 overlapped razors to put some pressure on the chip while i heated it, when th solder melted it fell on the desk

I've been thinking the last 15 minutes.... yeah I can actually think lol...
I could cut the black silicone, put 4 thin razors under the edges for the needed pressure... cut some foam and put it in a metal kitchen pan, put the cpu on top of the foam (to protect the resistors under the cpu) and then pour, and thus soak, the cpu in boiling water... it may just work

If the boiling water is indeed hot enough, then the solder will melt and the razors will do the popping for me

I won't be able to try it this week though, kind of busy, but at least I'm sure the cpu won't die of heat since it is not supposed to die until it reaches 140c

There was another "IHS Removal" thread where a member used a digital non-contact thermometer to measure the actual temperature that the solder softened up, well he came up with about 85C before the solder softened enough to remove the IHS. Unfortuelty he used a screwdriver to pry the IHS off and ended up killing 2x C2D processors because he pulled both the IHS and die off (poor guy)!

    Garrett,
What are you running for hardware these days? I havn't talked to you since back at the VR-Zone when discussing hard-modding our 7900GT's! (at least that is what I think we were discussing, it's been a while), lol!

Garrett, the hair dryer might not be such a good idea lol, as it heats up the IHS slowly, it also heat up the processor itself evenly, make the die warm as well.
If you use something quick it'll be painless, the heat would melt the top before it even reaches the bottom.

I'm assuming the solder that keeps the die on the pcb doesn't melt as quick as the solder that keeps the IHS on the die right?

    Rubycon !

I bet its easy for you to visit local Ace Hardware store to get a stick of PC Fahrenheit don't you ? Again, don't choose others, just stick to PC Fahrenheit !

When you got it, HERE on how to protect that die from crushing at it's corners when mounting HSF or WC block ! Trust me, you will never know how tilt those base when you start tightening those 4 bolts, learned it back from old Duron days !

Since C2D doesn't have those capacitors around the core, then it is even easier to make and goop art around it !

Now, never worry about "over" tighten those bolts anymore !

So Garrett did you get the bawls yet to pull the IHS off your processor? I have been seriously considering it but I still think the dangers outweigh the benefit (especially since I don't know if I would see any benefit since I have no idea how well my IHS contacts the die on my 3060)!
