This is really what I'd need but too bad the DFI chipset has to sit just under the 1st PCI-E slot and I don't want to use the 2nd slot.
The 7900GTO gets so extremely hot on the backside of the PCB just in front of the chipset area so even with this Evercool VC-RE, I have load temps of about 50-55C.

I have contacted a few American Noctua dealers and ask them to order this heat sink.Originally Posted by bofors
Interesting, I've been looking into chipset cooling. I did notice that Thermalright lists their chipset coolers as incompatible with the Abit AW9D-max. Anybody know why?
I'd spring for this noctua, or maybe I'll mount a 1u cooler to my nb.

Because it has a heatpipe. I believe if you do remove the stock cooling and slap on one of these it'll fit.Originally Posted by Navig
got the heatsink...initial verdict...400fsb no boot. HR05-SLi...boot. 975XBX. Will test for actual temps on another board later.
I thought you said you ordered the Noctua NH-U6?Originally Posted by cadaveca

Thanks, just wanted to be sure. Anybody actually seen or are running either of this nb coolers on an AW9?

Yes, i ordered teh Noctua, and it arrived friday. teh noctua will not allow my system to boot @ 400mhz. FSB. The HR-05-SLi WILL. the non-SLi will not.Originally Posted by bofors
Wow... does that surprise you? Does the Noctua appear to be too small or what? You are just using these heatsinks passively, right?
My BadAxe boots at FSB 483 (1333 strap + 45%) with the stock heatsink (which I lapped, mounted with Arctic Silver 5 and cool with two 50mm Delta, ~10 CFM, fans).

I guess I'm glad I had ordered the HR-05 already before knowing about this one. There was a cap in the way so I had to rotate it a little to make it fit. With the extra thickness of the NH-06 due to the dual heatpipes it wouldn't have fit for me, would have either hit my CPU cooler or the back of my graphics card. My chipset now though is nice and cool
Interesting how you couldn't boot with the NH-06....
BTW, so much for my comment about not liking the plastic push pins... My HR-05 is mounted with those

Intel Core i7 2600k @ 4.5GHz, 16GB DDR3-1600, Radeon 7950 @ 1000/1250, Win 10 Pro x64
the Noctua unit is abt an inch shorter than the HR05, with heatpipes of a smaller diameter. It's very effective at spreading the heat over it's entirity, but doesn't seem to have a large enough capacity to deal with the 975x chipset, even with a 70mm AMD boxfan attached...would only boot 1 out of 3 times.
The Tt extreme spirit 2 gets almost as hot to the touch as the noctua, but lets me boot up to 423(1066 strap as all the other are too. My conroe doesn't seem to like 1333)
And no, i cannot boot @ 400FSB 1066 strap on the stock heatsink w/ AS5. 393 only.

Damm... I was one click away from ordering three of these Noctua's over the weekend.Originally Posted by cadaveca

Sounds like your 975x northbridge is not the best either. The Tt extreme spirit 2 gets almost as hot to the touch as the noctua, but lets me boot up to 423(1066 strap as all the other are too. My conroe doesn't seem to like 1333)

How can you boot with the FSB above 400 on the 1066 strap? I thought the limit was 400 (50% above 266) on the BadAxe1. Do you have a BadAxe2?

I dunno about other revisions of the board, but mine(306) does not have a standard CMOS bios. This allows manipulation of the bios from windows. I simply set 1066 +50%, and use software to set it higher. Rebooting keeps the same setting, thanks to teh clockgen that supports high than 50%(I have yet to find the max, due to lack of multi adjustment).
I see, that is very interesting. I had assumed it would be reset. This is an important issue for me because I run a hacked version of OS X, so Windows apps. are not really an option (but I certainly would consider setting the FSB in Windows since it appears to stick).Originally Posted by cadaveca
Thanks for all the information.
BTW, I noticed that my BadAxe rev. 305 that I could not boot the 1333 strap with 4 x 1GB of RAM. It works great with 2 x 1GB though. I am going to be testing 4 x 512MB soon.
I am now thinking about getting a HR-05 SLI, but I am wondering if it will fit on my BadAxe with Big Typhoon. How is the fit on your Bad Axe?

The same as this:

Big Typhoon=NO

I think the HR-05 may fit on the BadAxe1 with Big Typhoon, so that is what I am looking at now.
Thanks, again.
I'll be ordering one tonight, let's see how it does.
nice! be sure to post results here
Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3GHz . DFI DK P45-T2RS Plus . XFX 9800GT 512MB . 8GB OCZ Blade PC2-9200 . WD6400AAKS AHCI .
Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic . Hanns.G 28" LCD . Thermalright U120-E . Seasonic S12 600w . Windows 7 Professional E Retail x64 .
I have the heatsink installed on my DFI NF4-D now. Installation was a tad difficult at first, but after i figured it out it wasn't so bad. It is keeping the chipset @ ~36C passive with ambient temperature about 18C.
I have the NC-U6 on my DFI Expert board and it clears both GPUs just fine. I think this is a better solution than the HR-05-SLI on the expert board. It doesn't mount so close to the Scythe Ninja as the HR-05-SLI does.Originally Posted by Timmay
The Noctua was cheaper than the Thermalright one for me anyway, and it seems like a better cooler.
It does not clear the first GPU slot on the DFI NF4/ULTRA/SLI-Ds.
Any more info on this comparison yet, I'm in the market for something good
I still use the NH-U6 however i now use it in a P5N-E SLI board which has a 650i chipset, which puts out a ton of heat. I stand behind it still as it does a great job.
i have a pic of the nh-06 mounted here.
