    got a semi- update.

I called eqiz and they said my ds3 wont be back for another 1 1/2 wks... And i just can't wait that freakin long to test this!!!!!.... So i ordered a P5b-Wifi. God, i hope this one works. I want my freakin 4 ghz....

Also, my results with the storm were not as good as they could have been. When i pulled the block off, one side hadMUCH better contact than the other, so it looks there are a few more degrees to be lost. I think it happened that way becuase the screws i was using were just barely long enough, and the 2 towards the top of the board were started first, and the bottom, i had to press the block down to get them to thread.

So, longer screws now, and better results to come tommorow. Porably more like tommorow late night, or Friday early early AM's. Gotta love that grave yard shift...

I havent' seen the 775 mounting system myself, but from what I have gathered, it would seem to me that if you simply make yourself a copper (or whatever metal) shim that fits around the CPU, and then sand ti down so that it matches the original IHS height (or perhaps slightly less, and put a few layers of tape in the corners to cushion the mounting preassure from the heatsink), then the problem is solved. Right?

I mean, this would alow the normal holddown for the CPU and everything else to work like normal, and its not a hard thing to do for anyone who has some basic tools and an hour for making it happen.

Or am I missing something? my (first) 775 motherboard is getting here in a about a week, so then I can more clearly visualize this.

I take it you haven't read the thread, right?
There are pics of my cpu with tape, and i think CrazyXp has some with foam on the cpu.

You really should go through the thread. Its onyl 5 pages, but good pages.

EDIT :: OOPPPS... my bad. Apparently i posted the pics in a different thread. Here they are for this thread.. 4 layers of electric tape for each foot.

Looking at that picture of Coretemp running 69c made me wonder what the point of this was. Were your temps that bad before you removed the IHS or maybe worse than that? I read through these pages and didn't see clear mention of the before and after.

Yeah because it's always a bad idea to test theories. There is just never a point in testing a thought is there?

menlatin, try no tape at all for a better mount, the core isn't THAT fragile, nice thread (at least the useful parts) , I never use pads for my naked amd chips, good mod, it's actually easier than doing an amd chip. I'll be doing it when I get a kentsfield, gonna skip core 2 duo this time around
ALIENS are bringing my next kentsfield based rig in a UFO case!

Sorry, no will do. I couldget great contact with my apogee becuase its shorter, and with the screws i had, the distribution of pressure was much better spread. Now with longer screws and the storm i should be able to get the same contact.

As far as core temp goes, i'm not too concerned with how much it drops, because those sensors are the hottest part each core. Where easy tuner and speed fan read though, is obviously closer to the surface of the die, which is what we are going to have the most effect on.

Here's some temps and clocks i've compiled...

    Old ds3
    Stock IHS
    Apogee
    3440mhz
    1.36v actual, 1.4v bios
    62c easy Tuner
    66c Core temp
    28c Ambient

    Old ds3
    Stock IHS
    Apogee
    3328mhz
    1.3v actual, 1.325v bios
    55c east Tuner
    58c Coretemp
    20c Ambient

    Old ds3
    Lapped IHS
    Apogee
    3608mhz
    1.46v Actual, 1.5v bios
    No easy tuner results
59c Coretemp (skewed because of super pi simultaneously running, IIRC it was 66c prime)
    20c Ambient

    New ds3 (much less vdroop)
    Lapped IHS
    Apogee
    3600mhz
    1.49v actual, 1.5v bios
    75c Easy Tuner
    74c Coretemp
    28c ambient

    New ds3 (much less vdroop)
    Removed IHS
    Apogee
    3520mhz
    1.41v actual, 1.425 bios
58c Speed Fan (same as easy tuner reading)
    69c Coretemp
    28c Ambient

Notice the ambient temps though. Makes a huge difference.

I think there were a couple more tests, like with the p5b at stock clocks, but i forgot to get screen shots. Also a couple stock clocks with storm vs apogee. Anyways, my (hopefully good) p5b comes today, and it it works, i will give you a plethora of screens, speeds and temps tonight.

Not when you don't have something you want to fix or change. That's what I was looking for. Why did he decide to do it? You don't take a $200+ CPU and just start ripping it apart unless you have something you really want to change about how it is working for you right?

Thanks for the before and after temps though. That's what I was looking for. Seems that there wasn't much change at all.

OH my MOTHER F*&*&*&&*&*&*( GOD!!! I Cannot win. I simply cannot win.

New p5b. Same problem. have to reset cmos after each reboot.

Also, it turns out my storm is pressing down on the capacitors on one side.

Why God? Why? I simply don't understand. Its like i'm doomed and will never be able to get a working setup with this. This is flat out rediculous.

Conclusion : I guess this means i have to get a ninja, or tower 120, Or grind down my storm....F*&#$Q$8890&%*(&*()&*()_!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone posting this crap, this site is not for you. You seem to have missed the "hardforum" exit on your trip down the internet highway. If someone wasn't trying to pop the IHS off a conroe, this wouldn't be xtremesystems. If you think it's stupid, don't do it. Personally I'm thrilled that someone had the balls to do it and I'm now considering it my self. Every mhz matters

So by what you're saying, because I don't want to rip apart my C2D to get 1c less temps, don't want to spend $500 on watercooling everything in my system, Don't overclock and test with my stuff outside the case and a refrigeration system pointed at it just so I can brag about some numbers that I shouldn't come here?

Please, there's tons of info here becides just getting a gazillion Mhz overclock. That's why I come here, because people have info and I may be able to relate my experience to help someone else.

I think he's upset becuase of your negative contribution to the thread. We don't need your continual pessimistic posts reminding us of what mother taught us not to do. XS does have a lot of information other than what is in this thread but you don't need to crap on the threads that involve mods you don't see fit to do on your own system.

Thank you menlatin for the hard work in trying this. I hope you can get your motherboard/mounting situation worked out. I'd like to see more conclusive results regarding temperature.

    FYI,

Radeon X800 GPU shimm is a bit larger than LGA775 CPU package, but not too big.
And it's perfect in height for IHSless C2D...
You were not supposed to see this.

Maybe you should go back and reread my posts. I made one post...and asked for temps...that's all. You need to learn basic reading skills. Don't tell me what I did or did not do.

    more semi-updates.

I've got the new p5b to boot with my e6400, but it only does with the 0302 and 0405 bios. although now i can't flash back to the 0302 bios, even through the bios ez flash. The board also only sees 1 core when the e6400 is in. I bought and 805D and that works fine, and oc's to 4.1ghz.

I did a little grinding down on my storm, and got it to fit without hitting the caps.

Anyways, with one core and one instance of prime here's what i got

    stock clocks/volts
    storm
40c Core temp Idle, 35c Asus probe idle
44c Core temp Load, 40c Asus probe load
    21c ambient.

leave it on don't void your warranty for a couple *'s. kills re-sale value too, and its not ethical to try and re-attach it.
