    AMD and ATI merger rumor

    source here

Nothing is impossible. AMD can't afford to buy Nvidia, but ATI is a possibility. I won't bet one buck on this. AMD may be better off buying some smaller graphics companies out there. But, what if AMD bought a graphics company?

    0) AMD must be making a lot of market share gains to be so confident.

    1) AMD can integrate graphics into the CPU. The graphics engine will have 2.xGHZ speed instead of the current 500MHZ, spewing 2 watts instead of 40 watts. Performance needs no emphasizing. Power reduction is especially important for mobile and silent PCes. The integrated memory controller has plenty of bandwidth. Z-RAM can provide a good amount of cache for the starving CPU and graphics cores.

    2) AMD can optimize AMD64 for graphics, adding a few new instructions and circuits to boost graphics performance substantially.

    3) Going forward, AMD may also integrate other stuff such as physics into the CPU.
, what is this guy talking about?

Inq Reports AMD will buy ATI

    http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=32077

I saw this and just had to post it. The Inq really doesn't have a clue it seems. Apart from the fact that ATI has closer relations with Intel, AMD really can't afford to do this especially after the 2.5 billion they are putting into Fab30.

EDIT: got beat while I was typing

<Aleph-One>I believe they are a fabrication. Most of the evidence would suggest that they were created in a studio during the Cold War to display our industrial superiority over the Soviet Union.

Intel also wanted to buy Ati some time ago but Orton dissed the merger...
Maybe AMD and ATI just work better together... both companies have 3 letters and both start with an A....

OK so the fact that there have been more rumours of Intel buying ATI recently and the close releations between those two companies. Not to mention the big investment in Fab30

    Why is that absurd?

Companies merge all the time. AMD and Ati are both in the chip making business so it isn't that weird they would merge.

it was originally placed online by Forbes...does that make it absurd too? not to defend Mike or anything, but he's simply relaying someone else's absurdity.

I think someone has been watching scifi for too long. I don't think it's gonna happen. They just dropped like 3 billion on the fab30

Its absurd whoever says it. Dear god you people can't get a joke and there was a thread a week or two ago where speculation was rife about an Intel-ATi merger.

AMD isn't making enough profit to buy another large company like ATI who are doing just fine at the moment so they have no reason to sell out. The money to upgrade Fab30 mostly belongs to external investors who have their own interests so currently (and for a long while yet) AMD simply cannot afford to make this kind of move.

Isn't ATi worth more than nVidia??? If so, if AMD couldn't afford nVidia how can they afford Ati??

I'll eat my shorts when AMD/ATI can come out with something that can counter an C2DX8000 with QuadSLI 7950GX2 on a Intel 975X chipset board when official Forceware drivers come through.

    It doesnt seem plausible because:
    1) The cost would be too high for AMD and they should be focusing on a comeback against Conroe
    2) AMD is nVidia's specialty
    3) ATi and Intel seem to be good business partners

Wouldnt this become a problem for Intel with chipsets and multy-GPUs since nVidia doesnt make good chipsets for Intel and ATi will me leaning more twards AMD?
If this is true, then Intel will have a nice CPU, but no video cards to pair it.
You can run single cards, but multy-GPU solutions will not be good on Intel.

I dont think ATi will stop making nice CF mobos for both side since it would be a huge loss for them if everyone wants to switch to Conroe.
But wont this create a conflict between ATi and AMD if they are joined since AMD would want ATi to increase production on their side?

I thought so too, I think in the OEM market they are much bigger.

    But Diltech is probably right

Maybe I interpreted their anual reports wrong but both ATI and Nvidia seem to generate comparable overall revenues, pretty equal.

Not that I believe this is happening but maybe AMD is looking to do what Nvidia did when they purchased ULI. Hasn't Intel pretty much choose ATI to partner with kinda sorta?

Anyways I just don't see this happening myself with what seems like a pretty close partnership between AMD and Nvidia but who knows, its all over my head.
