It's a real shame Intel doesn't have a decent Dothan desktop platform yet (but that makes it even more amazing to see this kind of stuff from a CPU that wasn't designed for desktop use!)

Would like to see the 3 stage on this. The Vegas cascade's are starting to pass and be better than LN2 is w/ the load. But these chips hardly put out any load anyways.

No, Dothan is no A64 FX or P4 killer. No doubt its faster than A64 and P4 in some tests. However, its also painfully slow in certain tests too.

Well most 865 boards overclock as good as 875 board so I don't see why he got a much higher fsb at the 875 board than various reviewers at a 865 board.

Maybe it's AGP/PCI-lock related and Asus has fixed something in their latest bios?

I really can't understand the hype.

Whilst it is good news of sorts and record chasing / benching enthusiasts are understandable excited I CANNOT understand the posters they say "WOW DOTHAN IS MY NEXT RIG - WOOT"

It is the reactions of these people that prompted the responses that LOE, LESTAT and ISS made which were very balanced and reasonable statements.

DOTHAN in current incarnation is not going to be an FX killer. Even in dual channel with decent chipset it simply doesn't match up to FX, A64 or even P4's in several categories of applications.

Even Intel admits that the Pentium M needs some work to be a truly viable desktop processor. Other then the extreme cutting edge, near budgetless enthusiasts, the more common OC'ers should stay away.

At least wait for Yonah. There will be substantial improvements not the least in supporting architecture (e.g. motherboard, chipset etc).

What is quite exciting is that Pentium M use transistors that use less energy, but do not scale very high (AMD's Turion's will use these types). If Intel used 'normal' transistors then they could scale up the Mhz. With general improvments in IPC etc that Intel's mobile division says they are working on are implimented combined with use of normal transistors could mean huge performance gains across the board. They would probably slay current FX's. However they will use considerably more energy and hence generate more heat probably somewhat close to A64's are generating now.

I expect Intel to do this mid-late 2006 -2007. They will ditch Prescott and Prescott based derivatives such a Pentium D and switch to architectures based on Pentium M.

I just wonder how AMD will counter? Deeper pipelines to scale higher? L3 Cache?

Obviously Dothan ain't the CPU for everyone but if your looking for a silent gaming rig I can't think of anything better. Especially if your already running a good s478 mobo. 1.7G dothan is only a bit over 200€ and does 2.4-2.6G fairly easily. PLUS its good for SuperPi 1M :D

It's quite a shame that this thread floods with pathetic pro-AMD comments, as it is really an amazing accomplishment!

He has taken a 27W mobile CPU beyond anything 95W FX or a 115W P4EE can do today, and LN2-cooling the board with this wierd adaptor is something i could imagine being quite hard by itself.. :clap:

wow amazing. nice to see a tweaked p3 architecture kicking some major booty. now if only intel would switch back to that architecture. (no intel for me until they do. p4s take up too much power and run too hot.) dothans don't have a killer chipset yet. (although ones are getting much better)

dothans are made for laptops ...i doubt intel will put them on desktops, cuz p4 has faster in so many (majority) of programs. i have a 1.6ghz dothan laptop and my gf has a 2.8 p4 laptop ...hers bests mine in speed no probz in almost anything (mine even has faster RAM). but her battery life is shorter, its bigger, heavier, hotter, louder etc ...

Regardless, this is an AMAZING overclock, and that deserves respect. :woot:

1. True Donathan isnt best at everything (since designed for mobile)
2. Last time I checked, P4 supported over 170+ instructions in flight. That means that Prescott must have at least 170 registers. Like AMD, they use register renaming. If you mean architectural registers, to support x86-64 they need same number as AMD. Perhaps the CPU isnt being recognized correctly in this new SuperPi for 64bit.
3. Oh yes, the wonderful benefits of 64bits from AMD... have you personally seen any of these benefits yet??
4. Donathan is not just a tweaked P3. P4 on Socket423 was a let-down, but its unfair to say P4C sucked. It was the fastest thing around for over a year. In fact its still a bit faster than Prescott in some benchmarks, and games. P4 is not a bad micro-architecture.

Transistors:
AMD already uses 3 types of transistors with varying tradeoffs in performance and power in their Winchester Athlon64. They made even further such optimizations in the new E stepping. Its all about balance, and tradeoffs.

Pentium M:
Changing CPU architecture like adding pipelines isnt so simple... thats why Intel has thousands of engineers and scientists. But, I heard rumours that the Pentium M successor will include FPU/SSE2 enhancements from the P4 core, and other improvements. This alone would make it much more competitive as a desktop processor.

As for what Intel or AMD will do next. Well, considering the many years of design and verification needed for each new core, I'm pretty sure they already decided that many years ago. :fact:

Just a dumb question... This adapter just works on Asus boards or any 875p (478 socket) board can use it?! This because I have a Ic7 laying down that could use this baby, and a 1.6 Ghz laptop of my sister just smilling at me! ;)

That is why I use dothan for. It's in my beautiful acrylic compact mobile case.

The chip doesn't generate much heat and overclocks great. In addition, it looks so sexy~ with that cool looking Thermalright XP90 in my tight a$$ mobile case.

Looks so tight, looks like a sophisticated engine under the hood. :banana:


Not only it games so well, but also noticed effective performance increase in every applications i run. I am a very happy dothan owner.

I feel these anti-dothan people should sign out the forum. i just don't think they have what it takes to become a member here.

well, it does look like intel has released am FX killer, very impressive, still a 4ghz SuperPI run would prolly take the crown back.

This is XtremeSytems. People here are Overclockers, they DO use LN2! Hell if I could afford it I would have one of these and a cascade capable of -100 Degrees C.

Getting the lowest SuperPi score is our hobby, if you not into overclocking or dont want the fastest sytem why are you here?

it's not worth discussing the sence of such radical overclocks and the run for the highest, or in this case lowest score.

Also comes to show that i875 is one great chipset - would be interesting to try Dothan w/ adapter on a i850 RDRAM mobo ;)
