weird GSkill SPD programming and heavy probs on abit kv8 pro 1.1

hay doodz,

today i got my new gskills....

so far so got. my ones are the 2 x 512MB kit with the pc3200 2-2-2-5 and pc4400 2.5-3-3-7 but when taking a look at the spd ratings i get this:

is this normal?

well ok, as i know that most ram manufacturers program their spd's with kinda low settings and just guarantee that the suggested ratings should run it might be ok but now comes the real problem:

the ram does not perform any good on my abit kv8 pro 1.1 bios 1.6

my rig:

-athlon 64 3000+ CG(AX) newcastle (capable of running 2.5GHz @1.5V primestable with air cooling)
-tagan 480-U01 power supply
-zalman cnps7000A cu
-160gb samsng spinpoint (sata -system disk)
-120gb maxtor ata133 (data disk)
-dvd burner
-gf 6800gt @ ultra
-tons of fans venting the case

and today i started overclocking with this:

HTT 250
multi 10x
ram: 2.5-3-3-7 1T 1:1 rating
2.8V vdimm
HT = 3x

--> no go.... system will post but i do not reach windows, not even with 3-4-4-8 1T

everything above 240mhz ram is unstable using 1T and won't let me get into windoes

ok, i thought it might be my cpu so i started this:

HTT 250
multi 9x
ram: 2.5-3-3-7 1T 1:1 rating
2.8V vdimm
HT = 3x

--> no go.... system will post but i do not reach windows, not even with 3-4-4-8 1T

conclusion after testing a lot more: 1T is absolutely unstable past 240mhz

my next tries were to reach the suggested speed of pc4400, settings:

HTT 275
multi 8x
ram: 2.5-3-3-7 2T
2.8vdimm
HT = 3x

--> no go... not even with lower timings like 3-4-4-8 2T

everything above 265 won't let me get into windows (i am getting bluescreen after the post screen)

conclusion after testing half a million different settings:

everything above 240 is not possible using 1T
everything above 265 is not possible using whatever setting

where is the problem now? my cpu can't be the prob, my power supply can't be either....

only things left is the ram and the mainboard.....

i already heard that the abit is kinda sh1tty for TCCDs but i did not imagine that it is THAT sh1tty (IF it is the board)

what do u think?

the 1T 240 thing is the mobo, happend to me and now look at my ram.
the spd doesnt matter, and the reason your ram isnt playijg nice is cause it need 2.65v. so id set it to 2.6 and hope it overvolts enough

no matter what kinda voltage i set, it is all the same, i tried

2.6V
2.65V
2.7V
2.75V
2.8V

you think my mbo is the reason?

just tried 2-2-2-5 1T @ 200mhz


a complete NO-GO, system won't even post, i am getting beep erriors and the have to clear cmos .......

doodz, this is pissing me off a lot.....

ram does not work @ its normal specs.... could it be that it is kinda defective?

darn, i thought switching over from BH-5 to TCCD would grant me sum higher speeds and stuff but these damn things just :banana::banana::banana::banana: up a lot...

try using the other sata slots

whats the max you can get with 2t?

Isn't 2x512 asking for troubles on most single channel motherboards.
Try one stick at a time and see what they do by themselves.

ofc the busses are locked (the 1.1 has the agp/pci fix), the board has only 2 native sata ports so that shouldn't be a problem. max with 2T is 265 no matter what settings (i am not new to the kinda OCing ) :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

everything above forces the system to reboot after postscreen :(

ram is pretested by gskill to run with 2x512 at rated speeds and i have seen ppl on other boards going the 275 1T and more in this forum and in others but the abit board seems kinda fux0red with TCCDs so that can't be the problem.

I don't mean it's a problem for the ram, but a problem for the memory controller of the cpu to run 2 512mb sticks. From what i've read everywhere socket 754 doesn't run 2x512mb sticks well at all. That is why i got the 939 cpu to run 1gb of ram otherwise i would have gotten a 1mb cache 754.
Trying them one at a time i bet shows much better results.

on what other forums did you read about gskill?

and did you try one stick alone?

Its actually well known that the memory controller on 754 CPU's has a hard time with 2xdouble sided dimms.It gets better with each new cpu stepping as AMD correct the flaws etc.

This is why you will see greatly reduced clocks with 2 dimms over what 1 dimm will achieve, its also the reason a single 256 dimm clocks a lot higher than a singles 512 dimm.

Please all remember also 256 dimms create a small load on standard off die memory controllers also so don't think just because you see 2x256 clocking really well 2x512 of the same will do as good as they won't.I have tested 256. 512 and 1 gig dimms using very similar IC's and the drop in performance is linear as the density increases.

well, i now tried it with only 1 module in but results are the same :(

1T over 235 drops out no matter what settings, anything above 260 drops out, no matter if 1T, 2T and other settings do not effect the drop out either...


and 2-2-2-5 1T @ 200mhz does not even boot but results in a permanent beeping error that forces me to clear cmos :slobber:

i even tried it now with a newcastle cpu with clawhammer core, the "so-called" clawhammer-512 - same results :(

Got any other 512mb dimms to test it with 1T? My CPU doesnt like 1T eventhough it'll do memtest at 250 1T but cant even boot into windows at those FSBs with 1T. It doesnt really like 2x512 1:1 above about 247 (tested with EB and TCCD).

Whats the CPU production date on IHS?

I think it's bad that they market the mem as 2-2-2-5 200MHz and 2.5-3-3-7 277MHz when thay're programmed with much worse timings. Some people may buy them with the belief they're going to run those timings when left at auto in bios.

dunno the cpu date cuz i am too lazy to tear down the zalman again (dunno how often i already did this today) but i have tested it with another cpu (newcastle aka clawhammer-512), exactly the same results (and the clawhammer-512 is way older), so either the ram is crappy or my mainboard is crappy with tccds

but i think i am not the only one experiencing heavy problems with tccd on abit kv8... i have read a lot in other forums concerning such problems....

tested with 2 x 512mb twinmos winbond BH-5

no problem to post @ 200mhz 1T with 2-2-2-5 up to about 220mhz 1T 2-2-2-5

but the gskil tccds won't even post with 2-2-2-5 no matter if 1T or 2T

get a dfi and watch your clocks climb ;)

Try using SATA 2. My DFI has 4 SATA ports and ports 1 and 2 didn't allow me to boot up at anything over 220MHz. Check out my results here.

yes, but on the DFI only the clocks limb, practicable speed increases far lower :(

already had it and sold it cuz i disliked it...

the abit has only 2 sata ports, so the NF3 solution to use the "native" ports does not work :(

what do you mean? its only slow if you dont know how to tweak the settings.
